Water heater: when the bypass valves are open so that water enters the hot water tank, are the valves in line with the hose or are they sideways to the hoses. Please respond and thanks.

when the valves are open the handle is in line with the hose. In bypass mode (for winter) the valve between the lines is open and the other two are closed. In normal use mode all are the opposite.

Summer position...in-line with hose and by-pass (middle valve) perpendicular to line....
