No 120v from battery

I was working on wiring a disconnect switch for my batteries and, long story short, accidentally wired it wrong. When I turned the switch, it started to smoke. I quickly turned it off, disconnected it, and realized my error.
However, now nothing that runs on AC works when I'm running on battery power. I checked the fuses on the converter and went through a troubleshooting guide. Still nothing. So tonight I replaced the whole converter, but still have the same issues. DC is not being converted to AC.
Any suggestions?

Well, the converter does not supply 120 V AC from the battery. The converter ONLY converts 120 v AC from shore power or generator to 12 V DC for charging the battery. You need an INVERTER to get 120 V AC from the 12 V DC side of things. Unless an RV has an INVERTER installed, then everything on the 120 V AC side is dead unless connected to shore power or a generator.

Also, there are no 120v fuses.

Well....not in a modern RV. I'm old enough to remember 120v AC fuses though.

I was under the impression that the converter went both ways - working as a converter and inverter.

And the fuses I checked were the 40amp fuses not 120v circuit breakers.

How was it wired wrong? It may help diagnose this issue. If you have an inverter, was it wired with reverse polarity? What is your RV and what model convertor /inverter do you have.

Yes, it was wired in reverse. There are (2) 40amp fuses for reverse polarity protection - those are the ones I referenced above, and both are fine.

It is a 2020 Greywolf with a WFCO WF-8955 MBA. Just got it this Spring and so maybe I misunderstood that the converter worked as an inverter as well. Perhaps what I thought was an issue actually isn't and the AC wired stuff only ever ran on shore power.

Yes, I think that you may have misunderstood what a converter does. The link I provided above in post #8 will explain the differences between the converter and inverter....and also the reverse polarity fuses on the converter you are talking about.

The OP says he was wiring in a disconnect switch and did it wrong. The only way I can think of wiring that wrong would be to connect positive to one side and negative to the other side of that switch. That would release smoke.

I think you may have misunderstood the function of your WF-8955. Per the manufacturer. The WF-8955 model provides 55 Amps and a clean, constant 13.6 VDC nominal output, for reliable operation of electronics and appliances. It does not function as an inverter and hence does not provide any 120VAC.

Where did the smoke come from? That would be what was damaged.

Smoke usually means irreparable damage to the device it escaped from.

Going back to your statement, " now nothing that runs on AC works when I am running on battery power", begs a question. Are you connected to Shore Power (AC from your house or the park)? That is where your AC comes from to run your air conditioning, microwave, etc. I think that you may have misunderstood the information from the salesman, or he may have been mistaken. Even if you have an inverter, it is usually limited to providing AC to one or two receptacles for a computer or similar low power consuming device. In some cases they are used to operate a household type refrigerator, but almost never any additional appliances.

That would be my guess too.

Not to confuse things, but there are combination inverter-converter units that perform both functions. However, to the best of my knowledge these are after market items.

You found your answer. Your 120V equipment will only work when connected to shore power with the trailer you have as equipped. The converter only goes 120V to 12V.

Safe travels

And pretty expensive aftermarket items:

Go into your bathroom. You should have a receptable (power plug) that has a gfi reset it power SHOULD be back on. My 2 cent.

Are you under the impression that resetting the GFCI master outlet will cause his unit to produce 120vAC from his battery without an inverter? It won't.
