Upgrade mattress for bunkbeds

One of the first things I did when I purchased my 26DBH was to replace the mattress the trailer came with. Now that my kids are a little bigger, they are complaining about the mattress, if I can even call it that, on the bunks. They are an odd shape. Does anyone know where I can upgrade the mattresses?

Thanks

If you don't want to start from scratch, TTnewbie, you can purchase foam/foam toppers and cut them to size/shape.

i topped my mattresses with cheap foam rubber waffle pad... 1 1/2 inches thick from Walmart and they sleep fine... covered both the mattress and foam with a mattress pad to keep them together... of course you can also spend more on a more expensive and thicker topper

look for a local upholsterer
they can make you a foam mattress ...
some of them even have some common sizes in stock

If your covers are still good they can re-sew them to accept a thicker foam insert

or ............ just add a piece of foam under your existing mattresses
once you put a sheet over them you won't notice

Thanks for the advice. I am going to try both suggestions starting with the mattress pads. There is an upholstery place near me so I am going to check them out too. I never thought about resizing the "mattress cover" that I have now to fit a larger pad. It would look a bit cheesy to throw a thicker foam pad in the bunks without a cover on them.

Have you checked out RV Mattress.com? They make all sizes of RV mattresses. They are a US company located in Phoenix, Az.

TTnewbie, you say you want to “upgrade” the mattress, but what does that mean? What is the complaint? Are you looking for something softer or firmer? People often recommend toppers, but I’m guessing they are mainly for making a firm mattress softer, not a soft mattress firmer. I am in need of a firmer mattress in my RV, and looking for options. So far, complete replacement seems to be the answer.

My kids are complaining that they feel the wooden board underneath them as they sleep. The "mattress" pad that came with the trailer is not that supportive or thick. Im looking for something thicker that they can sleep on and not feel the board underneath them.

I like air mattresses as you can make them as firm as you wish, but I have no idea if that will work in your bunk situation.

Amazon, Zinus mattress.
They have them in RV/short Queen AND in RV bunk sizes.
I removed my upper bunk and replaced the lower bunk mattress with the Zinus 8” foam so my adult size grandson can use it. I slept in it myself when my granddaughter camped with us. I was getting up a lot at night, master bed is east-west, and it was easier to have her sleep with Grandma. Plenty comfortable.

The bunk mattresses are an irregular shape so a typical mattress doesn't fit.

Just about every mattress store will make mattresses to custom sizes, usually with only a small charge or no charge over the standard size. This seems to be a holdover custom from the days when bed frames weren't standardized. Just ask your local mattress store--even the discount outfits.

By the way, I don't ever seem to remember seeing a mattress store that didn't have a sale going on. Is it the same where you live?

I went to walmart and bought a 4" gel memory foam pad. I cut it to fit including cutting the diagonal corner off. I bought a topper cover I put the pad in and I just fold the excess cover under the pad. I leave the original pad under the 4" pad as well.
