Wheel lugs

Has anyone noticed the cheap wheel lugs installed on there unit. The lugs are covered with a thin piece of from a plated sheet metal. Half of the lugs have splits in the crome plated sheet metal caps. Another disappointment. Has anyone replaced theirs?

Not familiar with your specific lug nuts, but I've seen others where the nut has a chrome cover that you pull off before trying to remove the lug nut itself.

Yes. I believe they call them jacketed lug nuts. And yes, they are a terrible excuse for a lug nut. After about a year, some jackets were loose, others were distorted. I replaced them with solid chrome lug nuts. Have never regretted it.

If you were asking me about the ones I replaced, I have no idea what size they are/were. I took a couple to my tire guy and he ordered what I needed.

I tossed all my original nuts after I ended up stripping the outer thin shell off a couple of them at last service. I bought solid steel nuts (chrome plated) on Amazon. Mine were 1/2" x 20tpi and they had a conical base. I bought extra long ones too. They were like $13 on Amazon. This is the set I bought (20 piece set for 2 axle trailer - 5 lugs per wheel in my case). Put on and take off with a 3/4" or 19mm socket.

Note: I had trouble with 2 of mine once the caps stripped off. I ended up using a 18mm socket to get them loose. Had to tap it on hard and then bust loose with electric impact gun. DO NOT use an impact gun to tighten, do that by hand and check with torque wrench.

I noticed the caps on my lug nuts are starting to crack, and this was the first time I’ve pulled most of them off. They certainly are cheap. I never use an impact wrench on lug nuts, so it is disappointing that they are failing.

It’s not limited to trailers, though. I have the same caps on my F150. Looks like some replacement lug nuts are in my future for the truck and the camper!
