30FW and 30 amp outlet

I already have a 30amp outlet at my house and my Isata 30fw is coming next month. If I use an adapter to plug the RV in to it, what problems if any will I have or what limitations should I be aware of??

If it's a 220/240 volt dryer or welder plug, you'll fry your electrical system and appliances. If it's a 30 amp RV plug, and your RV is 50 amp, you can use a 30 amp male to 50 amp female dog bone.

If it is a 120 Vac 30 amp RV plug you can run one ac and any any other item. I would not run the microwave oven and the AC at the same time. One AC running on my 2019 30fw draws 12-14 amps two runs 28 amps. One AC and all the lights and one TV pulls about 19 amps. So you are good with 30 amp service. Just make sure that the outlet is 120vac.

Absolutely verify that is is wired properly for a RV!!!! Is it is wired for a dryer or some other 240 volt appliance you will damage electronic things in your RV. There have been many posts about damage to RV when they plug into a 240 volt 30 amp receptacle.

It should be a circuit that is 120v since I had it installed about 3 years ago, expecting to get a trailer at some point. I may get an electrician to set up a 50 amp outlet as soon as we can get one in but is there a specific way a 30 and 50 amp RV outlet needs to be wired for a safe connection and operation???

A NEMA TT-30; 30 amp RV outlet is 120 volts only. This thread shows how it should be wired,

A NEMA 14-50; 50 amp RV 120/240 volt split phase outlet is common to other things.

"Should be" may bite you in the butt. There are several posts on here about electricians wiring up an outlet for an RY and getting it wrong! Who was at fault? Who knows if the owner was not specific or the electrician was not RV savvy. Bottom line is not good. Very costly repairs!

Either verify your self with a Volt Meter. Or repeat 12 times to your electrician ..........................RV RV RV.

Sounds like I am better off getting an electrician in and have him rewire to set me up properly with a 50amp RV plug if possible, if not then have him confirm that the 30amp is properly set up for a 30amp RV plug....

is this information good to pass on to my electrician??

I don’t know how far your breaker box is from where you have the existing 30 amp plug, but the gauge of wire will be larger to support a 50 amp and you also have two hot lines so it’s different wire required.

There is nothing wrong with using the 30 amp plug you have, just have it checked due to the $$$ at risk and make sure it’s right. I used a 15 amp circuit in my indoor storage to keep my batteries charged year round. If you don’t need to run both AC’s at the same time, the 30 amp will be fine.

Testing the outlet with a voltmeter is very easy. Looking at the outlet you should have 1 half-round hole on top and two slanted slots on bottom. Set your voltmeter for AC volts in a range that will show 110. The reading between the bottom slant slot on the left and the half round hole on top should be 110-120 volts ac. The reading between the bottom slant slot on the right and the half round hole on top should be 0. The reading between the two bottom slant slots should be 110-120 volts. The center hole in the outlet is just for a screw. You can do that check yourself with a $5 voltmeter and about 1 minute time.

Once you have verified that, just use a 50 amp (RV side) to 30 amp (plug side) dogbone adapter and you'll be fine. A simple AC/DC voltmeter is good to have anyway because you can troubleshoot battery/charging problems and other electrical problems with it.

I just checked the 30amp outlet outside and it looks like it's not RV compatible.
Anyone know how this might be wired???

Definitely NOT a R/V outlet.

How it's wired is anyone's guess.
Get a qualified electrician that has knowledge of R/V outlets to tell you what is necessary to convert it/rewire it into a R/V outlet.

We are all simply speculating from photos and unqualified information via an internet forum.

If you already have 30 amp to the outlet, a qualified electrician can convert it to the right plug. Not sure what you have but definitely not an 30 amp RV.

See below, 30 amp on the left, 50 amp on the right.

Are you saying the guy you are going to call to fix this was supposed to have installed a proper R/V outlet 3 years ago and this is what you have?

If so... please call someone else.

lol...in the electricians defense, it depends on what was asked for.

That does look like a 30Amp outlet...just not an RV outlet. 30A 125/250V outlet?

Agreed!

And for everyone's defense... to the OP... please contact someone with R/V electrical knowledge and supply them with the proper documentation (that has been linked to several times) so there is no question on what is required for anyone.

Looks like an L14-30R plug that I use for a generator backfeed.
Can be wired for 120v or 240v depending on your application.
Find the breaker and if its a single 30A, it'll be 120v, if a two-pole 30A then its 240v.
They have cords/adapters to go from this twist-lock to an RV (assuming its wired correctly)

They do have adapters and cords to fit this type plug as many generators have the same 30a/120v twist lock plug... BUT...BUT... as you said... if we make the assumption it is wired correctly, we have done the OP an injustice.

The better advice is still to have a R/V qualified electrician look at the connection and make recommendations.
