6K or 8K Generator

We do not boondock a lot. Is it necessary to upgrade to the 8k generator? For example, can we run the microwave with the a/c on and the TV on? DH always has the TV on.

If it is Summer and you have BOTH AC units running max cold, you may pop the breaker on the generator if you also turn on the MW. My previous rig had a 6K unit. Took care of all our needs 99% of the time, just the occasional issue when both units are running full blast.

2 ACs in 90 degree heat, charger on max power, tv on, aqua hot electric element is what it took to trip the 8k generator. Takes a lot.

It's usually about overloading one leg vs total amp draw before popping a breaker.

Remember that the 8k burns more fuel per hour which will eat into the time you can stay "off the grid."

At half load (which is where you will be 90% of the time) the burn difference is only .09 gph or 2.16 gallons per day. You will never be sorry you bought the 8k genset. Also, 8k will be better for resale value.

I have a Harbor Freight el cheapo 110v MIG welder I carry in the race car trailer. It worked just fine on my other rigs 6K generator no problem.
