I’ve found opening up and wiping them off as well as letting it “snap” back into place instead of easing off the pedal had eliminated our leak down. Definitely will get sewer gas if you don’t have water in there. Haven’t replaced the seal except for one warranty visit and I think it’s more my initial points

When I had those type toilets I would use a dish cleaning brush made of nylon flexible bristles, not the real stiff kind, to clean the toilet and the seal. Tied a string loop on the handle so I wouldn't drop it down the hole. Worked well to clean out stuff on the seal. Then I would pour about a 1/2 cup of cheap cooking oil in the toilet bowl, w/o water in it, and let it soak a while. then slowly open the ball valve and let the oil coat the seal. Helps. This was recommended by DRV/Mobile Suites 5th wheel company.

I was going to try to clean it off this evening and maybe wipe it down with some vaseline prior to tearing it apart. Never heard of the "snap" recommendation, but I'll definitely give it a try.

You guys have tons of good intel.

The commode on my Force will let water seep past unless you let the ball slam back into place. After flushing if you gently close the foot pedal, cuz maybe someone is sleeping, it will leak down. I take my foot off and let it close hard. Never fails after that.

That's got to be our problem. I've never once let the ball slam or snap back into place, and I tell the girls not to do it either. Operator error makes more sense than a seal failure this early on, so we'll definitely give this a shot.

Again, thanks everyone!

I don't know if we have the same toilet, but ours did the same thing about a year ago, ... on ours, there are two little arms under the flapper, one on each side, ... one of those had come out of its socket on the side of the tube going down to the black tank, ... have to shut off the water, press the lever to open the flapper/valve, then should see the arms and if they are both in place as they should be, ... if not, gotta reach in there to put back in the socket, ... I'm guessing that can happen if too rough with a cleaning brush in that tube, ... so it should be an easy fix, if that's what happened, ...

Clean the ball seal and I use Thetford seal lube if it sits for more than a few weeks

Everytime I hit the macerator switch I cringe. LOL>

I almost had that RV moment happen. I was draining my tanks and almost finished with the grey tank and it sprang a pin hole leak couple of inches from the fitting inside the wet bay put a towel over it got all done flushed hose and when I went to stow it away it ripped at the pin hole [emoji51] TG I was done. I didn’t want to buy that POS thetford hose so I got some heavy duty pool hose and change the fittings to cam-locks but reuse the thetford tapered end now no worries seeing that hose swelling up.

Does a macerator toilet negate the need/benefit of a macerator hose?

I cleaned and lubed the seal using the method hook47 described above. After looking at it closely, it was clear that when gently releasing the flush pedal, the ball was not moving far enough back to actually make a complete seal. After letting it snap back into place forcefully several times its held water for the past couple of hours.

Thanks again for the tips.

I believe it would, both of them macerate the stuff so it goes out of the hose easier. Your toilet does it before it hits the tanks, ours does it on the way out of the tanks.

If you had a macerator toilet instead of a macerator hose, would you be more likely to leave your hose connected at campgrounds?

Probably not, I would only leave the hose hooked up if we kept the gray water open, I havent talked myself into leaving that open at a campground.

It only takes me 10 minutes to empty the tanks and clean up, so I dont see the need yet, but may try it out. who knows.

I have found it’s more a factor of stay duration. Around a week it becxones nice to be able to just use the water and not worry about it, but 5 days and under it’s just not that much hassle to dump once or twice.

At the rally I did leave mine open but that was because we had to flush/sanitize upon arrival.
