I put a cabinet handle on the end for ease of carrying and positioning. After a little practice they work very well at getting you close to level even in an extreme situation.
We do the same. I always block up both rear duals when needed. After a while you will know how many 2x8s you need to get level. We have 9 2xs of different lengths + 6 4x4s 18"long for the really un-level sites.
