Cummins engine monitoring system

Has any one with a Cummins engine on a Freightliner M106 or M112 Dynamax platform considered or is using any thing like Nexiq Blue-Link or SilverLeaf to monitor or diagnose your engine performance? Just possibly looking to move to something like this to run the engine more efficiently.

I've been using the NexIQ Mini for over a year now. It gives good information on the performance of the engine. Granted, this is in snap shots, but it does help. I don't necessarily need to run instant information on all the parameters that are available in the Mini Report. If you go to one of the fancier tools, it may have more real-time information.

Also, it has a bit better reporting than some on error codes. I've attached one of snapshots that was a month or so after a low voltage start (about 10.5V) caused 14 alarms. You can see which each alarm is, and all the reports still show these items as inactive fault codes since the occurrence.

The nice thing with the report, is it does show the information at that instant in time. For example, Exhaust temps & DPF temps. If you take a report going up a steep hill, you can see the affect on the engine temp relates to the exhaust temp.

Overall I've been pleased with this tool. It's not real-time, but it's the level of information I want. It also is all done through the adapter reader and the phone app. Pretty easy to install and use.

X2 I have mine for about two years and it is a great tool.

In a jam and on the road, you can run a report and e-mail it to a

Freightliner Svc center and they will advise you of what to do. Great piece

of mind. Highly recommend it to all.

I bought the Silverleaf system last year BUT, I've not used it yet. The J1939 connector MUST connect with the port under the dash. I already have a Tuson Brake Controller using that port for my Featherlite trailer (which carries my Prius). Both Cummins and Freightliner will NOT help. They claim that unless one of their engineers check EVERYTHING. They cannot say if using two J1939 connections will have any adverse effects. I spoke with the boss of Silverleaf at an FMCA Event before purchasing the Silverleaf system. He assured me that it was not difficult to get it done right (safely) and, told me I could call him if I ran into a problem. I called several times and received NO useful help. Promises that a tech would get back to me but, that never happened. Bottom line, I spent $400 for the Silverleaf system, $800 for a Surfacebook (I'm a Mac OS guy but, Silverleaf needs Windows) and, have only aggravation to show for it. Silverleaf claims they've had trouble trying to get Silverleaf to work on a iPad so, no joy there. Right now, I would NOT recommend buying Silverleaf.

Silverleaf VMspc is fully configurable for gauges & parameters you want on a pad or maybe old phone, mounted to wherever you want. Gives passenger something else to monitor!!

Sorry to hear of your issues. Piggybacking the connectors may not be good. I wonder if the brake controller is only using the connector for an easy ignition & ground source?

Cummins engine monitoring system

Jkoenig24 I’m also a Mac OS guy but I kind of like the features of the SilverLeaf and the variety of features you can view in real time to run the diesel at it best I found their web site and been cruising their VMSpc forum and they seam to respond to the question.
Thanks All great information provided I intended to be useful for others in the future if they search out the key word. Apparently with 400+ views there’s interest.

I've heard Scan Gauge D is popular also, reports in real time, a lot of reporting options. Another thread said to order direct from Scan Gauge instead of Amazon to get the right plug.

Also check the OBDLink setup.

Replaced my scan gauge with one and since it connects over Bluetooth I’m using an old iPad for monitoring.

Much more at once and more overall than the scan gauge.

JPin AZ, I recently got a Cummins brand "Y" cable on eBay. I'm currently at the FMCA event in Minot, ND and, earlier today, Silverleaf had their presentation. I spoke with the presenter who said he'd come by later in the week and check things out for me. I've got my fingers crossed that 1: he WILL actually show up and 2: he'll be able to help get the Silverleaf system up and running on my DX3 WITHOUT losing the Tuson Brake Controller I need for my Featherlite trailer.

PS: Today, I also spoke with a Cummins technician. His opinion was that if the Silverleaf system only READ data, he doubted it could have a negative impact on the CAN BUS. I'm hoping he's right.

Neat place for me to install the scan gauge. Still have plenty of room to store phone, keys, or whatnot... makes it easy to read..

Well after some time look a couple different engine monitors like Scan gauge I wanted something that monitors the engine and what benefits might there be well I went with the Bluefire for motorhomes and after some time playing with different dashboard setting because there’s so many things to monitor this is the results. [ATTACH]229960 I can change this anytime with another dashboard, I should have screenshot while the engine was running but you can get the idea, this Bluefire just plus into the J1939 port and the app available on iTunes or what ever else you get apps at allow you to view real time anything the ECM is doing, as you can see in the picture mgp, fuel usage trip distance and how much fuel use during the trip. [ATTACH]229962 and I’ve already removed it when I went to Freightliner for service in case they need to connect their computer up I showed the technician and he was impressed with everything you can see. Note this is not a modification programmer.

David and Tracey—

We are very interested in the BlueFire— it looks so much better than the Scangauge D (which we just installed). While driving, the Scangauge is difficult to see—

Hope you have more comments on this as you use it.

Thanks
