Propane or diesel, I think a generator is some extra insurance , especially in regard to our full slide. The only time the slide control panel had a warning light was when I forgot to start the generator before bringing the slide in. Panel indicated I should start engine to charge batteries; I don't have exact wording but that was basically what was indicated. I have solar panels, but often park in shaded areas. As I recall, Brian C. said a common slide problem was insufficient power to operate the slide. Obviously, others have had no problem operating the slide off the batteries, but I don't want to risk having a slide failure. I find it pretty easy to start the generator when operating the slide. I would guess at least a third of our camp sites don't have power; those sites are usually nicer and more isolated. Sadly, those same sites also often have less than flat parking areas. Levelers would be nice. As previously indicated, how one uses their rig determines what will work best for them.
Happy camping!
