DX3 transmission stuck in neutral

After stopping twice yesterday, the transmission would not engage in either D or R. Stuck in N. Select window showed D but Momitor window stayed in N. A nearby Freightliner driver suggested disconnecting the chassis battery and let the computer reboot. After disconnecting for a few minutes, reconnected and worked normally. Since it happened twice I suspect there’s more to this than just rebooting the computer. Any suggestions?

I've seen mention of a couple of people having transmission problems because of a frayed harness wire. I think in all the cases it ended up being diagnosed by a Freightliner tech so may be time to head to a dealership if you cant see anything yourself.

I believe that the Allison push button tranny has a procedure to check for codes or errors.

Freightliner Service

When in doubt always consult the source. Freightliner customer service is always happy to help 1 (800) 385-4357 option 2. Always be sure to pick option 2. Don't be fooled by the prompts. Option 1 references RVs. That is specifically for their Class A bus chassis division. option 2 will put you in contact with the commercial truck people.

They will either be able to provide you with a solution or direct you to the closest Freightliner Service Shop.

also keep in mind the brake pedal must be depressed for the tranny to engage

step on the brake peddle

I had the same issue. After a service call the tow driver told me to stomp on the brake when you try to engage. It worked and has worked ever since

For anyone interested, the Allison tech support was terrific. Their number is 800-252-5283. If you’re in Lafayette, LA and need mechanical help, Old River Truck Service was also very helpful.

What did they have to do to fix it? The information can help others with the same chassis. Besides, inquiring minds need to know.

Like the others have said I put mine in gear once without stepping on the brake on my old pusher and had the same issue. I thing I just shut it down, fired it back up and it was fine.

I had a 2015 RAM 1500 that would do this very thing. Right or wrong, when I am backing my camper up I often Two-Foot it (one foot on the brake and the other on the gas). I found that the electronics didn't particularly care for this style of driving. After stopping the Two-Foot process I never had another problem. I can only assume the CPU didn't like getting mixed signals.

I have had this issue many times when I get in a hurry.

I'll reemphasize that you MUST depress the brake for the tranny to engage.

I have altered my "get ready to move" procedure.

1. release air park brake
2. step on brake pedal to hold vehicle
3. select transmission state ( Drive or Reverse)
4. check monitor for engagement
5. If showing no engagement ( Drive or Reverse selected but still showing Neutral)
6. cycle brake pedal and reselect Drive or Reverse

It should engage. Having gone through this I have never had an issue with "locked" in Neutral.

Remember, this is a commercial chassis and as such works somewhat different than your pickup.

Happy camping!
