Question FIRE BIRD Behind Pantry Cabinet REV24RB

We just got home and everybody went in the house. I plugged in 30A shore power, shut down generator, smelled electric smoke, unplugged shore power, pulled coach battery fuse, went inside to see smoke billowing from the pantry cabinet. I pulled out the drawers and saw BIRD ON FIRE with a candle size flame on upper left corner. A 1/2 second shot from the fire extinguisher put it out. I moved the REV24RB out of the carport so I wouldn't loose the house if BIRD fired up again. Unfortunately repair isn't a simple matter of replacing the fire BIRD. It may cost >$2000 for Camping World to pull the refrigerator and pantry cabinets to get access to the scorched plywood electrical panel and 110V Romex wiring. I think it would be nice if certain electrical components were contained in metal instead of screwed to a thin sheet of plywood on a foam body panel behind wood cabinet drawers with loose wires dangling.

I wonder what would cause BIRD to catch fire?

Glad you went inside and checked. Is that a new 30A service or have you plugged into it before?

BiRD = Bi-directional Isolator Relay Delay, also known as a Battery Control Center.

My first thought was how did he get a Pontiac in his REV24RB, I didn't think it was a toyhauler.

^^this^^ I also thought briefly of the Phoenix from Harry Potter.

Just to be clear, we were already made aware of this and I believe there is more data that we have already received. I will update as soon as I get the details just to stave off any alarm to other REV owners.

Based on the VIN notes and call records from the customers first call was that it was plugged into a standard house outlet using an adaptor and/or extension cord.

It appears it is already at Camping World for repair. Can you confirm the electrical connection so we can make sure we look at that set up? What type of outlet? amperage? extension cord?

BIRD Fire.

As an owner of a 2016 24RB REV I am anxiously following. Is there a recall pertaining to this known hazard? Mr. BC please update us as soon as you can. Thanks.

1. this is not a known hazard. This is the first and only incident we have seen
2. there is no recall as this is the first incident

This is not a clear cut case. It appears (though not confirmed) this was plugged in using an adaptor, possible extension cord, residential outlet and some electrical modifications were done by the end user.

Yup. But now worried about my REV.

Half second to get fire extinguisher on it , good job. Probably take me much longer to get it off the wall, especially since it is next to the fire area.

I had that thought also, except I thought he was towing it.

I don't think it is essential but I always have the house battery off when plugging into or unplugging shore power. A few times my inverter tripped with the house battery switch enabled. It took me forever to find the inverter the first time. I can't remember who told me where it was located.

I never had the generator running while connecting to shore power.

It wasn't hard to think of that. One day I lit the fireplace as we were having friends for dinner. It was a real wood fireplace, so you start the fire and close the screen, but, can't easily stop the fire once it is started. Well, sitting on the smoke shelf up in the chimney was a DUCK! When things got too hot he dropped down and right into the fire. We couldn't put it out in time, but couldn't open the screen and have flaming duck flying through the living room, and by the time we could get the fire out he was a goner. It was sad and after that we put a new screen on the top of the chimney to keep the creatures out. But, it was a night to remember and this did bring back memories. Got rid of the fireplace when we remodeled.

You didn’t tell us what sauce you used and how it tasted. 🙁

We opted for beef that night, but, the duck actually partially melted by the time we got it out of the fireplace. Makes you really prefer the "electronic" meaning!

It would take me longer than that to remember where the darn thing is at!
