Good sam roadside assistance

I've had a Good Sam membership and Good Sam Roadside Assistance for years but just found out something new. Maybe common knowledge to you folks, but the standard membership does not cover motorized RVs. Luckily in the one year I've owned this rig I have not needed their services. I just sent the renewal in with the upgrade.

I don't understand, I have the platinum plan, and moved from a 5er to a ClassC , they just grandfather me in and covered the ClassC with no added cost. What they did say they will not issue it if you buy a new policy. But if you where a member they will honor it until you decide not to want there service anymore.

Platinum is the next step up from standard. I just moved up to the platinum to get Class C coverage.

Even with buying the platinum, if you are buying a new policy, they will not offer it for ClassC, you can upgrade and be grandfathered in but not if you were not a member when they changed they will not offer it. I guess it's time to look at Coach Net or someone else if your buying a new policy if you own a new ClassC

Just called Good Sam. I only had a standard membership since my previous RV was a 5ver. They would have protected me in the DX3 should I have had a problem until my expiration date, but recommended purchasing a Platinum that continuous as a time extension to my old membership. I will get a refund in the event that I cancel my membership.

The Platinum plan covers all RVs including Class A's, B's and Class C's and utility and sport trailers.

I wonder what they consider a motorized RV, truck camper?

Good Sam RV Assistance

Something else to consider...Last year, a burned out bearing destroyed a tire, wheel, brake and axle. I was on I80 in the afternoon in over 90 degree heat, and 6 miles from a Camping World. I called GS Assistance and they
said someone would be right out. They called back twice to say they hadn't located someone who could handle my 32' trailer. Cutting this short, They never called me back after that. I called them twice and they said the same thing. After 5 hours in the heat with 70 mph traffic near me, I called AAA and someone was there in less than 30 minutes. He chained up the axle and slowly led me about 3 miles to an excellent RV and Truck repair shop. Guess what...AAA is now my "GO TO" insurance!

Be careful with AAA. My understanding is that they will not move two vehicles. If your truck dies, they move it, not the trailer.
Just recently GS put my truck on a flat bed and towed it about 10 miles to a Ford dealer. And, GS sent a Ford dually to tow the fifth wheel 15 miles to a campground. I paid nothing for this.

That's just a trailer without wheels. Besides, I highly doubt a truck camper itself will have a roadside break down.

Twice I had breakdowns pulling my trailer. I have AAA rv plus. I called, they responded. First time I was towed home using my 100 mile tow. They sent one truck. Loaded the vehicle on the truck and hooked trailer to the rear. Second call, They sent two trucks. One for the tow vehicle and one to pull the trailer. Again used my 100 mile tow to go home. Neither cost me a dime and were both excellent service. AAA has been great for me. 30 years +. Not everyone is happy with them. That said, there are unhappy people with any service.

Do Not Use Good Sam Roadside (Lack of) Assistance

I had Good Sam Roadside Assistance for the first 5 years that I had RV's but never needed to use their services. Then my Class A FR3 wouldn't start after stopping for dinner at a truck stop at the bottom of the Grapevine on the I-5 in Southern California. It was mid-August so it was 113 during the day. It was 7pm on a Sunday night when I tried to start the RV and the engine wouldn't start...didn't even make a noise when I turned the ignition switch. I immediately called Good Sam and they indicated that since I was not on the side of the road that I would have to wait until the next day to have someone come out. That next day I spoke with Good Sam on numerous occasions and was repeatedly lied to about when the mobile repair guy would be at my rig. It wasn't until 7pm on Monday before the repair guy showed up. The first thing that he said was that he told Good Sam at 9am that morning to call a different repair company as he wouldn't be able to get to me for at least 8 hours. He was just as frustrated with Good Sam as I was. As luck would have it, my membership was due for renewal so I cancelled it and immediately added RV Plus to my Auto Club membership.

Everyone has their stories. I have heard good and bad about all the services out there. They all seem to be the same overall. They all use almost the same services and tow companies. I think it all comes down to which of the companies gets to them first and how busy they are with the direct customers who pay more.
I have had both Good Sam and Coach-Net recently and both have been good to me. I had AAA years ago and can't say anything good about them.

Had a tire blow in Tennessee and AAA did not cover in that state.
They had a company come out to assist and tried to charge us $150 to change the tire with my spare.

I spent a night in Chicago on the shoulder of the Dan Ryan waiting for good Sam who never showed up and found out, never planned on showing up. I will never use them again and strongly urge all who do to find something else. They are not only bad but deceitful.

Good Sam isn’t who shows up, they contract with local service companies. Hard to say what happened since I obviously don’t know the whole story, but either Good Sam never called a local tow company or the tow company they called screwed you over. Why do I think there’s more to the story than “I called and they never showed up?”
