Interesting battery charge

So! My isata has a 155A alternator on it. ( why they don't option the available 225A is beyond me)
Anywho.
The V10 is quieter than the Onan generator. ( see where I'm going with this?)

Back in my car audio days, I've had Ohio generator build some pretty big alternators, and they happen to make a 300A for the E series.

Anyone thought about running their engine vs generator for battery charging?

Before you chime in... They run a 2ga directly from the alternator to the house batteries. That could easily be upgraded to 4/0..

I don't see why it wouldn't work with that said I would think the specific fuel burn for the V10 is much grater then the Onan not to mention the cost to upgrade the alternator. Have you considered sounding proofing the Onan? just a thought

Yup! 200 on the roof, and will be adding 400 more. ..I think I'll do both.

Nice you've got a headstart on me. I'm thinking somewhere in the 400-600 watt range will keep me covered for 90% of my usage

Also long ideling isn't the best for automobile engines
One hour of ideling is at least 33 miles of wear
Also unless the alternator has to be wound to provide the amount of juice you need at idle not mid range in the power band

No worries on the wear.. They are wound for low rpm.

Would possible work at highway speeds, but at idle not so much

Right now, when running down the road with fridge and tv on.. my alt and solar keeps up with the draw. Almost even.
A little more wiggle room wouldn't hurt.

I use the V10 often to charge the house batteries when dry camping. Quieter and faster since it's a higher voltage charge (13.8 vs 13.4). Fifteen to twenty minutes usually does it vs an hour for the generator.

One hour or idle is a lot more than 33 miles equivalent wear.

"why they don't option the available 225A is beyond me)"

Batteries can only accept a percentage of their capacity in an hour.

For long life 15% to 20% (if temps are monitored) is about all that can be accepted.

Gel or AGM can accept more faster , but heating the batt is still the limit.

The house batts should be Deep Cycle batts as Start batts die rapidly with a few deep discharges.

IF you Boondock much a SOC (state of charge) meter will aid battery management and life.

SOC meter will run $150 or so, plus installation.

Usually a camper will discharge to 50% down then recharge to about 85% to 90% full , as the batt acceptance rate drops for the last 15% and the charge time to 100% is way to long.

This is where solar helps , if you will park in the sun.
