Hit retract all first. During transit, if they settle even a tiny bit they think they are down.
But, wait....the levelers are not a lock out for the slides. If the slides are not operating, make sure the E-brake is pulled and the key is in the ON position. What model year 5 series?

My experience is I have to hit “Retract All” every time before I hit “Auto Level” if the RV has been moving at all. It just takes another minute to make sure you are starting with a clean slate.
