Magnetic Knife Bar with Removable Travel Guard...

We quickly learned that a store bought knife bar would not cut it when we dropped a couple knives on the first trip from the house to storage!

I built this with maple, rare-earth magnets, gorilla glue 3/16” clear acrylic and speaker pegs. I cut rough maple stock down to 18 x 2 3/4 x 5/8. I routered two grooves in the back to place the strips of RE magnets and flooded the grooves with Clear Gorilla Glue. The acrylic knife guard can be easily installed and removed using the small speaker grill guides. The acrylic slightly shorter in length and 1 inch shorter in height to account for the round-over edges and eased top and bottom. I eased the top and bottom edges of the maple 3º x 3/8-inch to help with getting the knives in and out with the guard on. The edges are 1/8-inch round-over. I ordered the Driftwood stain from Dynamax parts.

I recessed an area across the entire back to use the metal plate from the Zwillings mag bar we originally bought. Command Strips hold it all in place.

Good idea. Great looking piece of work. Nice woodworking and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing.
