MBS Unidentified Object under hood

What is this thing? It takes up a lot of space under the hood? Great place to store a tire inflater, etc.

What you see is the heat sink for a computer that controls engine, power train, or body electronics. Perhaps all of them.

Thing about heat sinks, they don't like to have air circulation over them impeded so I'd avoid storing anything on or over it.

Yep that's definitely a control module. ECM/ PCM.

Seems like a big waste of potential space, and I bet that is where the battery used to be.

It may seem like a waste of space but you sure wouldn't like how it runs without it. Some get tucked under the dash. Some in wheel wells all kind of silly places. Unless you want to go back to an 80's carberated unit its a must along with lots of wires.

Have often wondered about how to reconcile the “wasted space” against “saving weight” going as light as possible while trying to cram as much stuff into every possible crevice
Just curious😳

So true. A constant dilemma, and there are some things that you just have to have with you but virtually never use, so I am always trying to find an out of the way place to put those items.

Nope, the battery has always been inside the cab. Either under the drivers floor or pass floor. The ECU has always been under the hood. That space might seem to be a big waste but I would bet Mercedes-Benz has engineered it this way for a reason.
