The 295/75R22.5 Toyo's are about 1" wider, and they're also 16 ply vs. 14 ply. Anyone notice any significant difference in ride quality with the change to 16 ply?

JT
The toyos at 295/75R22.5 are indeed 1" wider but they're NOT 1" taller. The difference in sidewall ratio makes them almost exactly the same (Difference 2 revs per mile to be precise).

I just put a set of Toyos on Mine. Went M154 Steer and M647 Drive for a longer tread wear (almost 1" of tread!) and some more aggressive lugs to hopefully get a LITTLE more traction.

I was at $2750 for a set of 6 installed (only the steers balanced) so the price of 3700 sounds a bit high , but that may very well just be due to regional price differences. The drive tires were each $50 cheaper than the 154's so that may be some of it.

All in all very happy to come in half the price of Michelins. I've only driven it about 5 miles down the road but honestly it seemed to track better and drive with a little more "cush" so happy as can be so far. Will do 1000 miles starting Saturday so that'll be the real test. I'll report back

installed, balanced, old tires taken away. All done at my house for
$3797.00. Does that sound about right?
David you said that the Toyo 75R is equal to the Michelin 80R
Can you explain?

I put on 6 new Toyo M154, 295/75R22.5 (16 ply, load range H), with balance beads, for a total of $3,253 out the door.

I was pointing out (or trying to point out) that the 295/80R22.5's he linked were both 1" taller and 1" wider...and that the 295/75R22.5's were the same height as the Michelins but 1" wider.

Yes I guess I confused everyone including myself LOL

So I do indeed have 275 80R 22.5

So going to replace with Toyo 295 75R 22.5 and they will be same height

but 1" wider. hope I got that right this time LOL

going to get another price for the right tire this time.

So there is no difference in the ride?

Let me know if it not right

thanks

That sounds right to me!

I've got different tires in back so take it as you will but I'd say the ride got better for me. Even the steering seemed to track straighter with less micro adjustments needed. (No alignment was done)

Its only 5 miles so I'll be able to report better after driving 1000 this weekend.

No worries. I don’t think I relayed what I was trying to say very clearly.

Just had new tires installed thru Motorhometires and it was a very good deal and they come to you and in my case changed out the tires in my driveway.
I would surely use them again.

I've had a couple of messages about tires recently, so figure I may as well ressurect this one since it seems to be relevant.

A couple of notes now that I've got about 10k miles on my Toyos:

Would I do it again? - Absolutely

More Noise? - Once I get above 70 I start to notice an audible tire whine, but since I don't spend much time above 70 its really not been a bother.

One important thing to note, with the 647 in the rear, they have 29/32 of tread new. That's almost 1" of rubber, in defined lugs with 20k lbs back there. Because of this, the rear end did wander a little at first. This was most noticeable when turning and the weight shifted from side to side. It'd accentuate this and cause a bit of steering angle change which needed to be corrected. As my tire guy said, "they usually wear in and get more stable" which after 10k miles I can say has definitely happened. That sensation has been gone for awhile now.

Other than that though I have been very happy with the switch.

Thanks for the update. I plan to order tires at the end of the week so need to make a decision on steer tires. I've not had a problem with using non-lugged drive tires to date, but I do often end up parking in grassy spots which are sometimes quite slick.

I've ordered the Vevor tire tool as I plan to tackle this job myself. Still trying to decide between ceramic beads or centramatic balancers.

Really appreciate the insight you and the others provided with this thread! Have been researching Toyo v Michelin for a while and the drive tire front / lugs in the rear.

Decision is now very easy. Going with Toyos and Centramatics (have retro bands up front so can’t do balance beads).

Just got done mounting the steer tires, not a hard job at all. I ended up with Toyo M170s and ceramic beads. Now that I know the job is easy, I'll order the 4 drive tires and finish next weekend.

Nice work, glad to hear it's not a terribly tough job. Curious what you used to break lugs loose and to get them torqued right?

I wish I had some pavement at my place where the XL would fit, gravel may make this process much more difficult.

Won't have to worry about this for a few years though, our XL is still new.

Jim
Air gun in my garage with 150 psi using 3/8" line. My rear tires are coming in today, I may see if the onboard DX3 compressor has enough pressure to break them loose as well.

A good friend has a torque wrench that goes up to 550 lb ft, I borrow it all the time for my race car axle bolts which are 350. Typical rental cost is a 6-pack

I'm running an IR231C but haven't stuck it on one of the lugs yet to see if it'll knock it loose. Have a pretty solid compressor that will run up to 155psi from a 60 gal tank.

Curious, what is the actual torque spec for these monsters, I thought it was something ridiculous.

I'm running the M2-112 chassis, I'd assume it's the same wheel spec as the M2-106 though.

The M2-106 manual shows that a M22 x 1.5 on an Alcoa wheel requires 450-500 lb ft. I'm torqueing to 475.
