Possible DEF shortage to come?

I have read several disturbing articles about a looming DEF shortage. I am wondering if I need to start hoarding now or can I wait a bit Instead of opting for more fresh water, I may build me some DEF storage!

Problem with storing DEF is that it has a shelf life. It can crystalize and might be harmful for your system. Keep your DEF tank full and maybe have a fresh 2 1/2 gallon box in reserve. I put about 6,000 miles on my vehicle last fall and I think I used between 5 - 7 gallons of DEF...

What is the shelf life of DEF? I recently used a jug I got about a year ago with no problem.

Problem is this will cause people to hoard and then actually create the shortages... Remember the great toilet paper shortage of 2020! [emoji38]

I have not been able to easily find it on the usual shelves for the last year so there's already been a shortage.

Hasn't been an issue out here in Central Washington yet. However, it has gone from 7 - 9 bucks a jug to around 15.

There must be a shortage of water since DEF is around 80 percent water.

I work part time at an auto parts store. We had a shortage last summer but so far no news for this one. The rumor is getting out there though as a local farm called today for us to hold all the DEF, they were sending someone to get all of it. I called our competitor down the street - same farm - same request. I'm part time so I suggested we sell them 1/2 and leave the other 1/2 for our walk in customers. The on duty supervisor wanted the $700 sale though so they got all of it. I'm not sure if they bought out the two truck stops as well, but if so we now have a shortage in this small town LOL.

Self fulfilling prophecy.... Just buy what you need and magically the shortage will be no.more or much less than it could be. 🪄[emoji92]

I can understand a farm operation getting DEF in large quantities but they should consider a portable tank that holds 300 gallons and put that at the fuel station for the farm. That is what we do.

The only thing they use DEF with are the over the road semis and a few 1 ton trucks. They are just stockpiling in case the truck stops "run out".

Also many newer makes of farm tractors and other diesel equipment require DEF as well.

Well sure, but we are a small town of around 350, we all know each other and had this discussion during the last "shortage".

Let's see:
Large corporate farm
18 OTR semi trucks all DEF required
12 diesel support trucks 2 ton most DEF
6 field trucks all DEF
32 combines
12 corn pickers
3 bank out tractors

We go through a lot of DEF and a whole bunch of diesel.

A 300 gallon DEF tank only lasts 2 weeks.

I can see why a farm would want some DEF in inventory. BUT as I said earlier a portable 300 gallon tank of DEF does not adversely affect general public most of the time.

What's your source for filling the tank? Is there a bulk source somewhere?

Not the govt bringing any shortages. It’s easy to blame them but it’s not them.

I work with a lot of raw materials for products. The issue is just incredible demand and low supply. High pay rates have forced many raw material suppliers to keep their workforce small and their inventory low.

The govt can’t help or hurt the situation.

Hoarding in reaction to rumors doesn't help, either.
