My last 4 R/Vs all had toppers and they all held a certain amount of water. It has never hurt a thing nor ruined any of the toppers.
I'd rather the water be on the topper than on the slide roof.
There are literally hundreds of forum posts about this and what folks do/don't do to keep the water off. Some use beach balls, some build a PVC teepee, some use rope, some use pool noodles but most do nothing.
You can raise/lower one end to drain before closing or just stand back and let the water rinse the side of the slide.
Much ado over nothing.
