Question TPMS on the 2019/2020 Isata 5 28SS

I was on a road trip out west, came back to my home state and discovered a side wall crack in the right front Continental tire this rig came with (less than 8k miles on it). I had the tire replaced ASAP as I felt I could have a blow out at anytime. After the tire was replaced and I started home the TPMS went into alert (10 or so mins later) saying that it wasn't getting any readings at all from the replacement tire, the diagram that the RAM shows is a blank square for the right front tire. Does anybody know exactly how the TPMS system in this year RAM works? Are the sensors in the wheel or the valve stem?
The tech who did the replacement tire work told me he replaced the stock valve stem with a new longer version so that checking the air pressure or adding air would be easier to do, is that the issue here? The replacement valve stem doesn't work with the TPMS on this RAM chassis?

I was curious about this myself. It appears the sensor and the valve stem are all one component and I read the TPIS has to be reprogrammed for the new sensor.

The firm that changed your tire should have been able to see there as a transponder on the wheel when they broke down the tire.

TPMS on the 2019/2020 Isata 5 28SS

Thanks for the reply milkman. I looked at the RAM manual and the info in there is rather vague about this system. The outfit that replaced that tire is appx 150 or so miles from home so that's bad news, I will contact them in the AM to see what they say about this whole thing. In either case the tire has to be broken down and that sensor replaced, just goes to show if it's not one thing it's a another.

Please let us know how you resolve this. I am not sure (from what I have read) that you can replace the valves with any similar or longer stem equivalent without losing the sensor. It has to be a MOPAR part or its sub contractor equivalent to be programmed into their system. As you say the RAM manual is vague and the MOPAR forums do not seem to have encountered this.

My recollection is that it is all one piece; the sensor and the valve.

I had to replace one when a TST sensor got stuck on the Dodge valve. The dealer mechanic was able to save the other one that was stuck.

Yours looks a little different probably due to more capability.

You might be looking at a $200 part. Call a couple of Dodge dealers for pricing AND availability.

I saw after market ones but decided to buy MOPAR for piece of mind.

Here is a parts reference listing for the TPMS and the TTPMS for the 3500. I presume the 5500 will be the same but cannot confirm. You can see that the prices are not exorbitant but they seem to be wheel specific. also seems that the sensor and the stem can be acquired separately.

Wow, that is a good find. I don’t know if it makes a difference but that is a wholesale price list.

If the OP can’t recover his sensor from the tire shop he should have his VIN run by a dealer to Insure he gets the correct module.

The 5500 has a TPIS (information) system and the 2500/3500 have the TPMS system. They are not the same in the way they work or display on the dash. Not sure if the sensors are interchangeable. I would definitely talk to the RAM dealer parts department before ordering online so you have the OEM part number.

There are quite a few Mopar parts dealers online that are cheaper than the dealer. You would need to make sure the tire shop knows how to program the new sensor into the system.

Usually, buried somewhere in that 500-page owner's guide are instructions to program the TPMS yourself.

For a GM truck/SUV, it's something like:
  • Turn the ignition to ON (don't start the engine)
  • Turn the radio on-off three times (This step varies between models). Horn will briefly honk.
  • Within 60 seconds, go to driver's side front tire. Start releasing air from the tire until the horn briefly honks. (at least 2psi must be released).
  • Within 60 seconds go to passenger side front tire. Start releasing air, same as above.
  • Within 60 seconds, go to passenger side rear tire. Same drill.
  • Within 60 seconds, go to driver's side rear tire. Same drill. When you complete this, horn will honk twice, indicating that the new tire positions have been learned.
  • Refill the tires.
  • You will need to do this every time you rotate the tires.
This is kind of a pain, but you can do it yourself.

TPMS on the 2019/2020 Isata 5 28SS

The system on my RAM chassis is definitely a TPMS , the alarm calls itself that and the RAM manual also calls it that. I received a call back from the tire outfit that replaced my tire and they are saying that my chassis doesn't have a TPMS! We discussed this for awhile, I sent him photos of the display, manual and the alarm, so now he is looking into this once again! He told me he had contacted his contacts that supposedly know all there is to know about TPMS systems for all the major truck/car companies (GM,FORD,FCA,etc) and they are telling him the RAM 5500 chassis doesn't have a TPMS.....I find all of this extremely hard to believe and I told him so (the discussion got a bit heated)....so now after I sent him the photos and other info he is once again looking into this matter for me. The TPMS system was working great up to and until they changed the tire so to me they are responsible to fix it/resolve this issue!
Time will tell, not sure what exactly is going on with all of this but I need that TPMS to work! Thanks to all of you for your feed back.

Here is what the manual says:

 After a tire rotation is completed, as shown below, the system can auto learn the locations of each sensor ID. Auto learning/local- ization occurs when the vehicle ignition status is changed from Off to On and speeds of greater than 5 mph (8km/h) are obtained and remain over 5mph (8km/h) for at about a 15 minute period. You may need to drive for 20 minutes to account slower speeds and stops.

 If the tires are rotated incorrectly, the Auto localization of the TPIS sensors will fail to locate correctly resulting in incorrect locations for the pressure values displayed in the Instrument Cluster.

I don’t plan to do any tire rotations, so should be good unless I have a tire failure or a sensor stops working.

We definitely have a TPIS system. See below.

TPMS on the 2019/2020 Isata 5 28SS

The alarm came on appx 20 mins after leaving the tire service center. I was on my way home and didn't have the time to go back then, I drove home (150 miles and going 65--70 mph) with the alarm never clearing, the alarm is still there today, days later. They said they didn't see anything like a TPMS sensor in or attached to my wheel when they removed the defective tire (if that was true how did the system work correctly before they changed the tire).
The reason I went to this truck tire service center is because they where the only ones that had this size tire in stock and they have the bay and equipment to work on this size tire/chassis. Pomp's tire in Indianapolis Indiana is the outfit I am dealing with, they are a very large company doing only tire work for trucks, tractors, etc.

I have a 2019 chassis and yours looks different. Is your chassis a 2020?

TPMS on the 2019/2020 Isata 5 28SS

I just checked the label (RAM/FCA) on the door, the chassis was built 07/19. My manual is for a 2019 RAM Commercial. Dynamax started building it in early 2020 and I got it in March of 2020.

I had a similar problem with sidewall failure on the Continental Vanco tires that came on my motorhome. At under 8,000 miles these tires SHOULD be covered under the terms of the Continental Warranty but getting Continental to honor that warranty was impossible. I believe that these sidewall failures in Continental Tires are the result of a manufacturing defect and the tires are dangerous to RV owners. I recommend filing a complaint with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Only when enough complaints are filed will the NHTSA take steps to investigate the problems with these tires. Here is a link to the NHTSA web page for complaints:

There was a similar issue with Michelin 16" XLT tires some 7 or 8 years ago. It took over 10,000 complaints, some injuries and 2 fatalities before the plaintiff's bar would take the case; and only then did the NHTSA take action. The problem is that we RV/truck owners do not keep log books and do not drive regularly so its very easy to refute any claim with inadequate inflation, excess speed or highway damage. Add that to the even larger issues of Chinese trailer tires with no proven or certified loading capacity, and that leaves the NHTSA very understaffed to deal with an issue that is largely seen in political circles as a toy/discretionary income problem of underspending on maintenance.

I was a victim of the Michelin problem and had the opportunity to read the court records and NHTSA findings before tackling Michelin engineers during a race car tire test. They rolled their eyes, gave me the big "yawn" and essentially told me and my team that we did not know what we were talking about. A month later the settlement was announced. A settlement that required documented evidence of the tire failure and an attestation from the tire shop as to the condition of the tire when its carcass was removed.

Unhappy TPMS on the 2019/2020 Isata 5 28SS

Up-date on this situation, the TPMS sensor has been replaced (Not a MOPAR part but a supposedly comparable part) but I am still not getting any readings from the right front tire. We (the tire folks and me) have done what is supposed to be the learning process when a sensor is replaced many times but so far no readings...Very frustrating to say the least...
