I know the phone can charge on the iPad wall wart...so I assume that is regulated by the phone/battery. The USB's we install just look like a circuit board...very small. So maybe there is logic there to determine the required draw, but I don't think Apple would leave that up to the charging system to handle. That would be unlike them.
Well, if there's a circuit board it must be a converter, otherwise it would be a straight 12V connection and no board would be needed. At least that's my uneducated opinion and we all know what that's worth.

Thank you for the information. In our FF Signature Ultralite, 8280WS, the USB charge port is a combination USB + 12V cigarette plug next to the bed. We were told by our dealer that they have had a number of these fail were the USB faults but the 12v plug still worked. Each has been traced to the customer attempting to charge an iPad. I was going to attempt pulling the unit apart to trace where the failure lay, but the dealer informed me that I would void the warranty. He simply ordered a new unit and replaced the burned out one. No direct charge to me.

I unscrewed the outlet from wall. Checked feed wires for voltage. The feed had 13+ volts (shore power plugged in). So BC is correct the USB is faulty. I will replace and enjoy. Thanks to all for the input. I am replacing it with a double that also shows line voltage. This was a double output. I’m also replacing the bed unit at same time. I don’t know if it is working or not at this time.

I know this is an old thread, but I just bought a used 2019 Isata 3RW and can't find the rear USB ports (assuming there are some in the bedroom somewhere). Can anyone give me a clue?

Thanks, Bill. Good to know there are people out there willing to help. Cleverly hidden under the mattress and the only place we didn’t look. Thanks again.
