Well that was a waste of time...
So when I built my new shop at the house, I can’t ise the Duke Power right of way adjacent to my property because it’s too steep.
So in my brilliant thinking, I thought I would raise the hitch and cut some of the length off and all would be good.
I redrilled 8 holes and raised them up an 1 1/4”. Then I cut off 3” off the brackets.
Well, the idea seemed good in my head, sometimes form doesn’t follow functionality.
Oh well, it’ll still help on a few drives I’ve ground into.

Seems straight forward to me. OrangeCrush is simply tired of dragging the ground with the hitch assembly. Making it shorter/and or raising it up should give more clearance. I wonder if the 34KD version would have this happen less often?
And does anyone have a comment about the Grade 5 bolts that are on this assembly? Seems like something this beefy would have Grade 8?

Those wheels dug into the ground so deep that it stopped the truck dead in it's tracks.
I also had to remove the rear scissor jacks and switched to the old-style screw-up jack stands.

Do my air bag mod and you can gain another 4 to 5 inches of height just for those types of situations.

Hugh you have 279 posts. Is there a sort that would help find the one you mentioned about air lift?

I’m not having much luck trying to post the link but if you Type in DX3 air bag mod in the search block it will come up.

it is the hitch on the back of his motor home he raised the receiver up and cut some from the bottom of the side hangers to try and clear the bottom.

No welding required, Mark unbolted the crossbar of the hitch, drilled a new set of holes higher up the side plates and rebolted the crossbar in the new higher location. He was then able to cut off some of the side plate to give more ground clearance underneath the hitch. This is a mod many DX3 owners have done including myself.

When I see someone with a cutting wheel like that it reminds me why I bought a plasma cutter.

I'm not sure why that happens. Pics weren't taken sideways, weren't uploaded sideways but always seem to come out sideways.

I'm in the bodyshop business, I didn't feel like dragging more tools out and since I already had an air hose out.... of course, a plasma cutter would have helped with the holes I had to drill..lol.

It is the auto rotate of your phone doing that...
For some reasons, lots of iPhones do that when photos are posted to a website or uploaded to a computer.

We have a 20' (16') tilt bed trailer with an adjustable hitch. We kept breaking the two bolts that held the hitch assembly to the trailer. We were using Grade 8 bolts. We switched to Grade 5 and have not broken another one. My only guess is the Grade 8's are too brittle, the 5's have not bent and wear well. We carry spare bolts and fiber locking nuts in the front mounted box but so far have not had to change any out.

Height
I would have to agree with Webefine, air bags not only stabilize your rig and give you a better ride but they can also increase your ride height. You will have the option to raise or lower your unit, also are great when towing. Keeps the rear from sagging. No one wants a sagging rear.

You could have gone up quite a bit further if you had trimmed the fiberglass a tiny bit right above the receiver tube. I did that and got almost 4" of height gain plus another 2-3 cutting off the ears. I have a plasma cutter but used a sawzall when I saw all of the flammable spray foam underneath.

Seems like something the factory could do from the start?
