Looking to purchase a Sabre 36bhq 5th wheel.

I am looking to upgrade to a Sabre 36bhq 5th wheel and wanted to get help on truck options. I am looking at Ram 3500 srw and Ford 350 srw trucks, of course diesel. Originally wanted a 3/4 ton but figured pun weight would be a problem. The truck will be my daily and I really don’t want to drive around a dually everyday. Appreciate any help/advice.

Trailer specs
Dry weight 12k
Pin weight 2,100 lbs
42ft long

I pull at 36QBOK with a 2018 F-350 long bed SRW and it pulls it and handles it like a dream.

That’s great to hear. Do you think I would be crazy to go with short bed? I drive around for work daily and it would be a problem with longer bed.

We pull our 36bhq with a F350 diesel short bed srw with a slider hitch that I rarely find the need to slide. The F350 is a daily driver for us.

Perfect! I would like to go with Reese goose box but I’ve read mix things about using it in short bed trucks, would love it if I did not have to remove any hitch from bed.

F350 SWD short box

We pull our 2018 36BHQ with a F350 SWD short box.Truck works great and once I learned how sharp I can and can't turn the short box is working well.

I went from a short bed to a long bed and do think the long bed handles the trailer better. I would recommend the pull rite super glide hitch if you go with the short bed. It slides automatically and will prevent you from accidentally getting in a tight spot and forgetting and ruining your truck.

Just my 2 cents. I know everyone will tell you that you don’t need it but I’ve seen several guys backing in and busting their windows because they got into a tight campground and were in a hurry due to people around watching.

2015 2500 Duramax and 2017 36BHQ weights

More info than you want but here's how my weights break down:

Truck front GAWR 5200
rear GAWR 6200
GVWR 10000
tire weight rating 3195 per corner, 6390 per axle
Max trailer 17,100
max GCWR 24500
Sabre GVWR 14225

Weights when loaded with firewood front truck box, full of water, full of fuel, two adults and two kids in truck.

Steers 5060
Drives 6700
Trailer 11260
Total 23020

Standard bed, Curt 16k fixed hitch, no issues turning, plenty of clearance. I have a set of Timbrens in the rear. Without them the truck was close to level front to back, with the Timbrens the rear is about 1" higher than front. I've pulled the camper from Iowa to the Black Hills and Kansas City for my furthest trips and everywhere in between.

As you can see I'm a little bit over the truck's ratings for a 3/4 ton. I believe you would also be a little over a SRW 3500 ratings assuming a GVWR of 11500.

I carry a lot of firewood, fill up the front of the box. Guessing without the wood, I'd be within specs.
