2012 MB Sprinter Diesel Oil/Filter Change

My 2012 MB Sprinter OM642 3.0 Litre Diesel V6 Turbo is in need of an oil/filter change and I want to know if there are good options to having this service performed by other than a Mercedes-Benz dealership? The service manual suggest that using other than Ravenol Motor Oil is not safe for the diesel motor. Is this true or necessary to protect the life of my motor?

I think you need to use either 229.51 spec oil (229.52 should also work). Mercedes dealer sells the oil. I usually buy the oil NAPA when on sale for $5.99/qt and do the change myself for about $90.

I usually buy 14 quarts so I have an extra if needed. I believe the spec is ~ 12 litres or about 13 qts. Do not overfill!

Thanks. Do you replace the drain plug and seal as well?

Dealers usually want $200.00 or more for the easiest oil change I have ever performed. I been doing my own since I bought it new in 2013.

I do use Mobil 1 0w30 ESP X1. Meets MB oil spec. 229.52. NAPA runs sales a few times per year. Have it as low as $5.99 qt. I keep enough on hand for the next change.

I use the Mann oil filter, which is what MB uses most of the time.

Have not replaced the copper seal on the drain plug to date. I do flip it and reinstall. No leaks at all.

BTW, there are many MB approved oils. All of them are synthetic. Latest MB approved spec. Is 229.52. There are other specs that can also be safely used.

Here is a link to approved oils.

Checkout idparts.com
They have German oil and parts and shipping is very low. Ground is $5.00
Remove the filter before you drain your oil. Also if you have a suction device there are little pockets in the filter housing that hold some oil. Could blot it out with paper towels also.

I read somewhere once and can't remember where, it said don't wipe the oil from the filter housing. I still do but replace with fresh oil.

I may have read it in the serving procedure in the MB DVD that I have. Oh well.

X2 Mobil One ESP 0W-30 and Mann Filter. Bought 26 Quarts when it had a rebate form. Have changed mine 4 times, piece of cake. Air Filter and Cabin Air Filter on Amazon for a pretty good price every 2 years. I do my Fuel Filter every year or 10K miles although some say its every 20K miles. Be sure to replace the Turbine Seal if you do it. There's a little blurb in the maintenance manual that states at least yearly but might be overkill. Europarts online is another great parts source.

I fill the crankcase through the filter housing part way or all the way depending on how many other things I am doing. Been working on MB Diesels since 1973.
Had my own shop and now have a retirement shop where I work more than before!

2014 Solera 24R I go to the Mercedes dealer for about $7 per quart of 229.52 oil. Mine takes 13 1/2 guarts and get the oil filter from the dealer as well as the plug ring.

2013 MN Sprinter:
I get mine from Advance Auto Parts. Mann HU 821 X is for the MB Sprinter and other vehicles. Some stores have it on the self, others may need to get it from their warehouse. Usually next-day delivery. The Mann also seems to be the least expensive. Imagine that!

Napa can get the Mann filter and they also have a NAPA filter that is supposed to be the same. I just stay with the Mann. Not a big deal either way.

I get my fuel filters from this place. The link I am inserting is for the 5 pin connecter.

https://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/...d-wk820-6.html

If you decide to change the fuel filter yourself make sure you know the full procedure and follow it exactly. It's actually very easy, but you must install the compensation ring (seal) correctly.
