I bought a 4 pack of new locks (that just happen to come with a different key than cH751) and changed the outside locks on my brand new unit just to get everything on the same key. I had a key for the outside shower, another one for the storage and a third key for the fuel station. Why 3 different keys for that stuff? I also added a lock to the generator door since I have no generator in there and will just use it for storage.

[QUOTE=baranski;1846852]So assuming buying used I'd want to change the locks on the storage and 'house' door, what doe this entail and possible costs.

Forester 2401R is the coach in question.

Links to where to get locks? Or something simple a locksmith could do?

I don't like the idea that dealers have a "master" key to the standard locks.[/QUOTE

I do not understand all I know about this!

I have a 2014 that uses the same lock that my 1985 did on the storage doors. Don’t waste your Time and money changing the locks. If they want in all they have to do is bust the one that’s on the door. You will find that most campers look out for each other while camping. The problem is in storage.

I was told by my dealer that my keys would open half the locks in the campground. I personally have found Rv,ers to be a fairly honest bunch of people.I seldom lock mine up unless I'm going to be away for a while.

I have camped since I was 11 years old . Have never had any thing missing from a campsite. Always lookout for other people stuff when their not on site. Have had other campers ask to use my keys to open a door as they have misplaced their key.

I replaced all the keyed 751's with simple thumb locks. I do, however, have one compartment that I keep secured with essentials.

I had 2 entry doors with 2 different keys, plus the storage cabinets with CH751's, so I needed 3 keys. I changed one door and all the storage cabinets to match the other door. Now I only need one key. So I think are reasons to do it.

I changed all my outside storage locks with a combination lock sold at Amazon for about $15.00 and a rubber cap for $4.23. Part # for lock is combi-cam 7850RL and rubber cap is called Cam dust Cap

Save your money. I opened the doors on another unit different model with my keys. I'm sure there are only so many configurations. I also put the expensive industrial locks on the compartment doors because of the talk of the 751 locks and everyone having the same key. Thieves destroyed the compartment doors and locks getting in. Had damage fixed and put cheap locks back on. Just empty the compartments when not using. It's a pain but your gear is more secure in your garage. If someone wants in bad enough no lock will keep them from it.

I used barrel styl locks

I changed all my common locks out to a barrel style lock. They were not expensive and the key wont break off. They do have different styles such as ones that will not let you take the key out until it is in the locked position. Also you need to make sure you get the correct depth. Our camper required 2 different lengths. Typically you can order these at one time and get a matching keyed set.

When I leave my RV at the RV storage facility I don't leave anything in the storage bins.
I leave the doors unlock too. Usually the damage the thieves do breaking a door is more costly then what they steal. I leave the dish and pots/pans in the trailer. I remove my electronics except for the TV. Thats why we have insurance anyway right. I'm more concerned about damage than I am with something missing.
The keys are pretty standard and will fit other trailers. I imagine someone with a few keys going around an RVs storage facility trying their keys and will find something to unlock.
My RV storage place has good security with video cameras and I feel pretty safe there.
If someone wants my sewer hose, please take it : )

Convenience

I changed mine out just so I could have one key that opens all my doors, bins, tool box, and bunk ends. Having 4 different keys for one trailer is just idiotic, although it might be handy if you're in an RV park and lose your keys. It cost me about $75, and was worth every penny. I think I had 4 different lengths of barrels.

rekey

the storage locks
I recently bought a new motorhome and noticed the locks were the same as my trade-in. I priced new locks keyed alike because you sure don't want 13 new different keys. I didn't want to spend $200, so I just took the locks apart and swapped two pins. I the took the rekeyed lock to a locksmith and had a new key made. About $12. plus the cost of some copies.

Check you tube for lock rekey instructions. Use the saved money for dinner on the road.
