My goodness, $24K? Fuel and exhaust problems aside, does that include an engine overhaul/replacement?

You may want to check with your insurance for that. Engine repairs would not typically be covered but since it is from a mistake you made I really don't see a difference for this or if you hit a tree.

So to be clear... $2,400 or $24,000?

What needed repairs wasn't my point, I didn't have details so just said engine, powertrain would have been a better choice

Oh my, $24K is a lot of coin for replacing "bolt-on" components. Depending on what Sprinter engine you have, you can purchase a fully dressed replacement engine from MBUSA from $12K-$16K.

I'm glad you are OK with that cost.

I'd love to see the bill. My gut (and years in the automotive industry) say $24,300 for external engine/fuel/exhaust components is questionable.... but that's just me... Mercedes or no Mercedes.

The OM642, Mercedes Re-manufactured fully dressed engine with wiring harness has a MSRP of $16K with a $1K core. It comes with a 3 year Mercedes warranty. The only things required are starter, alternator, AC compressor, PS Pump, belt, install and programming.

I know accidents can happen and they do! Did you contact your insurance company to see if they covered this?

But what I don't understand is if you are filling up at a gas station that sells both diesel fuel and gas from the same pump. Don't you have to push a button or lift a lever that turns on the dispensary of the fuel you are going to use? This is labeled either diesel or the grade of gas that you are going to dispense.

I know at every pump that I have used, I have to do this. Also the diesel fuel hose is separate from the gas hose so, the diesel fuel button/lever is labeled and sits below the diesel fuel hose or sits in the fuel nozzle receptacle. I do not rely on fuel nozzle covers as BP stations and others can be miss leading.

I had to explained this to my wife so, she knew what fuel to use when she had her VW TDI and had to fill-up.

I am just saying!

I disagree with you, not really what I would consider stupid on your part when every diesel pump is green, accept BP. Humans become conditioned. that is why we have standards. But everyone I know who has called BP on this is told "there is no standard, you made a mistake".

every person I know it happened to boycotts BP, including myself. I bet you never go to BP again either. sooner or later they will realize they are loosing customers one at a time.

On a side note:

Another problem with BP at least in my area, is they do not even refine the diesel fuel that they sell. It is clearly labeled as such on the pumps in our area. But the selling BP stations sell the diesel from $0.05 to $0.10 more than any other station in the area.

I needed diesel fuel and I went to a BP station once. As soon as I read the label that they did not refine their diesel fuel and would not warranty the quality of said fuel. I only put in enough fuel to get me to another station.

I will only go to a BP station if this is the only station around for 100 miles and I am pulling my trailer and I really need the fuel.

Argh! I hate those stations that use green for gas. Can't all the stations get together and agree on something as simple as a pump color scheme?

When towing a trailer or toad, the wrong colors make it really hard to pick out a pump correctly from the entrance. Often we just have to stop near or just indside the entrance, not blocking traffic but probably making a bunch of people mad, and walk over to see what the pumps really have to offer.

Really, the OP feels bad enough already. Obviously it was labeled and he's already kicking himself. All humans make mistakes.

Many stations do NOT have gas and diesel at the same pump. They also have pumps with gas, mid-grade, premium, E85, diesel, off-road diesel, etc.

BP creates a nuisance by having gas pumps with green handles. Diesel owners look for the green. If we are tired or in a hurry, we may make a mistake.

I thought the opposite

Was at a BP station, with a truck area near by, had spent the night, had to fuel up my 3010, Class C E450 before I left. Started to fill about a gallon and saw the green handle. Freaked right out & stopped it, double checked and I was fine, but cursed BP. Those damn green handles should go.
Thank marketing, but my mind now tells me to avoid BP stations, not what they intended.
