Fuel coming out of fill point

Filled camper today with fuel and when I removed the fill nozzle fuel came out. Did not think to much about it but the engine became hard to start. Pulled out the interstate and no power. Thought I had bad fuel and added a water remover to fuel. After many attempts to run down the road to clear what I thought was bad fuel I decided to add clean fuel. When i opened the fuel cap after a few seconds fuel came pouring out. Anyone have any idea the cause? It seems like the fuel tank is being pressurized somehow causing the engine not produce enough power

I think I would start by replacing the fuel cap sounds like it is not venting as it should, this is a guess on my part but something I experienced on my old class A. Let the forum know what you find.

Sounds like a clogged tank vent/purge. Maybe in the evaporative emission system?

This is more common than you know. There are several threads on this forum of accounts of folks making the same mistake. Colors on fuel dispensers are not standardized. The colors used are strictly the purview of the pump manufacturers such as Gilbarco and Tokeim. The marketing folks have duped the public into falsely relying on colors and pictograms rather then actually reading words. A few things are standard, though; Diesel will never have an octane reading, Diesel fuel will never come out of the Gasoline nozzle, and Gasoline will never come out of the Diesel nozzle.

After seeing many green pump handles on gasoline pumps I have become totally paranoid. I check everything about five times to ensure I have Diesel. I feel your pain.

... but that doesn't address gas pouring out after you fill it...

U are correct about the overflow. The repairs will be complete tomorrow and I will fill it, hope it doesn't overflow. Perhaps the vapor pressure of gas was to much for the diesel tank.

The mechanic said the diesel tank has no vent unlike a gas tank so vapor pressure built up when running down the road so when I removed the vent cap out came the fuel.

What was the “repair” they did? Any damage? I once put 10 gal of gas in my diesel, quickly switched to diesel. Lucky the fuel tank was almost empty 100 gal.
Good travels.

There was damage-had to replace fuel pump, fuel filter, drain all fuel out. May have future problems with some sensors or fuel injectors so we will see.

I would say green IS the diesel standard every where I go accept BP!
I stopped in BP once when running out gas on my KTM 690 motorcycle. I grabbed the non green handle (which ended up being diesel) but the smell alerted me after I pumped about a quart. So I filled the tank the rest of the way with gas (and it actually ran better) Now I always "sniff test" the nozzle before pumping. Same with filling my boat with non ethanol. the diesel pump is right next to the non ethanol so I sniff test to make sure the boat gets gas.

I have heard of so many people filling diesel trucks with gas at this BP near me, and everyone called HQ, so they know there is a problem, but they just don't care.

Ouch - that hurts just thinking about it. 24K does seem rather expensive.

I did get lucky and found a really good place, Star Quality Auto Center in New Windsor NY. They have a guy who ran the shop at large mercedes dealer working on it.
