Replace Sprinter 3500 Battery

Mercedez says it is really best to buy the Mercedez battery for my 2014 Solera 24 R which is on the 2013 Sprinter Chassis. Do you agree or can I use a different replacement battery and safely save some $. Thanks Rich

Moved thread from the General Tech and Repair section to the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Chassis sub-forum.

I’m pretty sure Mercedes didn’t invent the battery.

Statements like this are why I don’t own certain high end vehicles and appliances.
If you can find the specs for your battery from it’s label or documentation, I’d start looking anywhere else for a replacement…..if that’s truly what you need, as opposed to Mercedes maybe just trying to take your money.

Ok thanks for moving to the correct forum and thanks for your thoughts on batteries, with which I agree. Travel safe.

Believe it is an H8 Group size 49 AGM battery, with high cold cranking amps. Several sites will show batteries that will fit by vehicle.

We replaced the Mercedes battery with one from Autozone. The best thing about it is the location under the floor panel make replacement difficult with the wires in the way and the weight of the battery. It fits like a glove. The nice guy from Autozone did all the lifting and I held the cables out of the way from the passenger side.

Amazon, maybe?

I've entered vehicle information,(both cars and our Sprinter (2017 Forest River 2401 MBS) to my Amazon account. If I need a part Amazon tells me if it's appropriate to any of the three vehicles I have listed.

I searched "Sprinter 3500 Battery" and received a number of possibilities, all of which Amazon said would "fit my vehicle" There's the added benefit of free returns for prime members.

I DO NOT HAVE ANY AFFILIATION with Amazon. Just a suggestion.

A Champion AGM H8 (GRP 49) with 48 month warranty fits/works fine. Got mine on sale at PepBoys a couple yrs ago for $140 installed. The MB dealer about $525 for a battery back then.

I'ds say any AGM H8 with around 900CCA would work fine.

I may need to replace my 2015 Forester MBS chassis battery this year. Would like to avoid dealer and buy battery myself to save some money. Anyone know of other shops who could replace it for me? Or is it simple enough to replace myself? I am not too handy. :-(

Desertsquid mentioned replacement at Autozone but I assume he first took the floor cover off himself to expose the battery?

PepBoys charged $18 to install mine. Do Not Let them put a "settings saver" in the OBDII port to save all your settings like radio, etc. It caused a ton of codes that neither my code reader nor PepBoys could clear - Cost $199 to have the MB dealer clear them (PepBoys did reimburse me).

Thanks AudiDudi! So did you or PepBoys first disconnect the chassis battery switch in front of the gas pedal before switching out the battery? I am not clear if that is necessary or not.

As far as I recall, neither of us disconnected the switch by the gas pedal.

My gut feeling is that disconnecting that switch certainly can't hurt anything.

OK. I think I saw in another older thread someone saying that disconnecting the chassis battery switch first ( did not see this step in Sprinter owners manual ) would reset the maintenance settings on dash but someone else said that was not the case for him?

As far as I know disconnecting that switch does not reset the maintenance settings. I do that myself after I change the oil using the buttons on the dash by the speedo.

Disconnecting the ground lead by the accelerator is not necessary when replacing the battery. When the ground lead on the battery is removed, that does the same thing. I replaced mine with a good AGM myself. If you can handle the weight, it is not difficult. Ensure the replacement battery has the same dimensions as the original. Otherwise, the hold down won't work.

We did remove the battery cover, we had to giver the battery a jump to get the rig started. Autozone tested the battery before selling us the new one. We were surprised when the guy installed it for us. Great service! There was no additional charge involved. He wouldn't take a tip.

Why didn't you use the jump post under the hood? At least my 2016 has one,

Drivers side of the engine - red "knob" you push in and turn is the + and there is a grounding post on the driver's side fender.

Thanks for the response Mikegjax. I realized after more thought that once the battery cables are disconnected for replacement it would be the same result as as disconnecting the battery behind the gas pedal! Duhhh!

PS I also do know about the jump post under the hood as that is where I can connect my voltmeter to check the current voltage of the chassis battery. :-)
