Should I Change the Oil

Just got a 2106 Prism with less than 3000 miles since new. Mercedes Sprinter.

Should I change the oil?

I'll probably do it anyway. Manual is vague on time.

We have a Mercedes Dealer close by that is on the list of Sprinter Service Centers.

I have heard that service for Sprinters is expensive. I wonder how much a simple oil and filter change would cost?

Send a message via AIM to B and B
Depending on filter set, if fuel filter is required and oil type I would budget at least $250.00 for a initial service.

I did my own oil change and the parts were ~$92 for the oil and filter. Very easy to do and you don't even have to jack up the motor home. Napa puts the oil on sale for $5.79/qt occasionally.

Although the manual says it will tell you when to do it, I am going to do it anyway. I think it says somewhere else 15,000 miles.

We are going on an extended trip in a couple of weeks so I want a base line for my ownership. I especially want a fuel filter change and that is a pricey little item. $55 to $75 according to parts houses.

My single engine boat's recent annual service was over a grand so this MB deal is not much if it will last 15,000 miles.

Just an opinion --- If I were to purchase any used vehicle, I would change out ALL fluids in order to set a baseline of service.

I agree on oil and fuel filters because they are exposed to the outside environment...especially changes in humidity.

What else should I change?

Coolant can be tested for effectiveness and gear oils are sealed.

What am I missing?

Thanks

Many tribologists recommend an oil change every 12 months regardless of mileage and I follow this advice.

At 2 year mark, I would replace brake fluid (something I do on all vehicles), coolant, and possibly power steering fluid. Since I've been doing fluid replacements every 2 years, I've never had a power steering rack leak, never a radiator coolant leak, or needed to replace and/or overhaul brake calipers.

Skyliner hit it for change out of all fluids.

Oil and Filters for reasons of age or miles. Removes any contaminants from lube system.

Fuel filter after 2 years and low usage maybe something growing in the filter.

Coolant yes a test will show if freeze and boil protection is good but corrosion inhibiters need to be refreshed on occasion 2 years is a good mark

Power steering fluid change removes contaminants that build over time.
Brake fluid -- over time will have water contamination and should be changed again 2 years is good plan

Rear end fluid same as brake fluid

By all means check your maintenance schedule for length of time from original purchase ie 24 month schedule
Then do all steps in 24 month schedule and all previous

This will set a base line that YOU know the status of maintenance performed.

Also make sure they reset the maintenance due cycle in the computer.

If fluids are being changed on an 11 year old unit , belts and hoses might be a good idea too.

Does the oil/filter change, etc. have to be done by a Mercedes dealer?

If, not would it be a good idea to have them do it?

Would only a MB dealer be able to reset the maintenance due in the computer?

We have one listed as a Sprinter service center about 30 miles away.

Although many places and people can provide service an authorized Sprinter Service will have the correct tools and parts. The approved oil is not something found in the local Wal-Mart. There is a special tool needed to replace the clamps on the fuel filter that is not conviently located.
Since the engine is warranted for 5 years or 100,000 miles you could avoid a dispute if something needed to be replaced under warrantee. Also any work done by MB will be recorded and available to any authorized Sprinter Service center in America. For these reasons I have chosen to use MB Sprinter for all service on my motor home.

You can reset the maintenance due on the computer yourself.

I wish I had a dealer close by but by the time I drop it of and go pick it up, I am looking at about 500 miles. I will likely have a dealer in Arizona when we are there for the winter do the fuel filter. But oil changes are simple to do myself.

I am doing have MB do it for this reason and to establish the date it was placed into service for warranty purposes.

I have scheduled service at the MB dealer for next week. 30 miles south.

Thanks to all for all the great advice.

M-B Sprinter dealers are happy to service delivery Sprinter vans. .

But a Sprinter motor home , a class "C" may discover ,"its too big" to fit our shop is more the norm.

Call ahead to see if the local MB dealer will service the unit.
