Read an article the other day about sewer rats can come up your pipe.

Agree with nearly all of the response to this issue. When camping at sites with full hookups, we always leave all drain valves closed until we are ready to dump. This insures that odors and sewer gasses from the campsite sewer system do not collect in your own tanks and RV. Methane gas, one of the chief by-products of organic waste decomposition, is odorless and colorless. It is much less dense than air, so it can easily migrate into your holding tanks from the campsite sewer system, and you won't suspect a thing. It can be a real fire hazard. Keep the dump valves closed.

Black is always closed until dumping. Grey open and then closed for water to flush pvc line.
Never do I have both the grey and black open.

I always add few gallons of water to the black tank after dumping.

The Florida RV park we stayed in last winter had a number of permanent TT and fifth wheel residents. It looked like they re-plumed the sewer system with PVC, eliminating the holding tanks. At that point you would need a household toilet with a built in trap.

Think the pvc is just to eliminate the stinky slinky. Pvc piping is common for seasonal's and the units still have holding tanks.

That was a requirement that we were plumbed into the system- still dumped the tanks at the end of the weekend
