I'm really not sure what the issue is with the math and I'd really like to get us on the same page so lets try something else.

The population of New York is 20mil. There are 240,000 cases tested positive in New York. 17,500 deaths.

Clearly there are more cases but we don't know the total. So how many people do you think are really infected? 1 mil, 2 mil? At 2 mil and a 50% infection rate of the entire population of the US would mean 1.3m dead. You can half that number if you think 4mil have already been infected in New York.
