No haircuts ??

I was ready to go in for my biannual hair cut. I had which one all picked out and ready for the cutting but my barber is closed TFN. Guess I'm going to clip it myself. Hope I don't screw it up.

Fortunately, the gal about 10 spaces down was a beautician for 50 yrs, has a barber chair in her shed and cuts hair for $10.

And just on last nights national news (NBC) there were two stories about the exact same thing happening. One woman with breast cancer and one with colon cancer were both supposed to start treatments within the next week or so. Both cancelled until further notice. The woman with colon cancer was, I believe, stage 4 so delaying treatments, for her, is likely a death sentence.

My wife was recently diagnosed with some kidney issues and was supposed to see a specialist at the end of the week. Waited 3+ weeks for that appointment. The office called and it is posponed indefinitly. I called in mid-February to schedule my yearly exam for mid-April. That's when I get my old-fart medicine prescriptions redone for the next year. Surprise, surprise, the first appointment I could get was mid-May. My prescriptions will all run out by then and none have any re-fills left. The receptionest said, "You should have called in January." Almost three months to get a routine appointment - - and people complain that the VA is bad. Meh. I am expecting my appointment to be postponed also so I guess I'll just do without the RX's. Probably won't kill me.

As I started out - - I don't think any country is much worse than another in this thing. Seems that everyone was caught with their pants down. And even though my haircut post may have sounded like I was poo-pooing the problems (I didn't mean to) I do take the situation seriously and take the proper precautions. I am not out kissing strangers or licking door-knobs but I am not going to get so paranoid that everyday life stops. Still have to keep living. Still have to shop and do the everyday things that life requires. To quote from a recent movie (thanks Helen Mirren), I'm not going to live like I was already dead.

I believe you misunderstood what I was saying. Healthcare is provincial jurisdiction in Canada. The point is that pharmacists in the province of Manitoba are not being properly supplied anymore by their government with certain medications for simple refills of existing! prescriptions.



In regards to the testing for the corona virus, I can not count the CBC as a reliable source of information, I can't comment on NBC. Fact is that the Canadian Federal Government 3 weeks ago donated 16 tons (35,000lbs) of medical supplies incl. surgical masks and disinfecting wipes to the Peoples Republic of China of all places to help with the outbreak of the virus in their country. We Canadians would be grateful right now if we had these masks and disinfectants, same with the $50,000,000 that this same government 'donated' to the WHO 10 days ago.

If the federal government had implemented the proper screening and quarantine measures at our ports of entry and restrictions for travelers from countries like China and Iran as requested by the provincial governments weeks ago then we would likely only have 10% of the infected people. Also, why was the same government so reluctant in closing the border for ILLEGAL border crossers???

I initially had a cheap hair clipper (don't remember the brand), and tried cutting my own hair. It was okay, but the cheap clippers tended to yield some unexpected results. I had to go to a pro to get it fixed. But I didn't give up. I bought a good Wahl hair clipper, with all the different length attachments, and finally got to where I could trim my own hair pretty consistently. I haven't been to a barber in over 10 years. Sometimes I still mess it up, but my hair is still thick enough so I can usually blend it in.

I think the livelihood of the stylists and barbers is the real problem.

Whenever I have had to have a 'maintenance' prescription refilled, and it does not depend upon a lab test, doctors have been willing to authorize a refill, as long as an appointment has been scheduled. I've never had the experience as a patient, being penalized for not being able to see the doctor for scheduling reasons.

Waiting on surgical consult with 3 Surgeons now. My Dr is trying to get me into 1 of them. Just got another load of antibiotics to calm things down. If it become an emergency I have instructions which small hospital to go to in smaller centre that can do it. As fair as haircuts I have my DW do mine and I have been learned how to trim parts of her's to keep it fresh.

I bought a Flowbee when haircuts got to $15.


I have been using it for over ten years. It takes about 20 minutes. I have my wive trim the back of my neck.

I was even luckier. My late wife was sent by her mother to beauty school with the idea she'd at least have a trade.

About every two to three weeks she'd get out her clippers and scissors then point to a kitchen chair and tell me "Sit Down".

It was up to me to do the cleanup

We are lucky enough that our DD is a beautician . She is also pregnant with her first so it was also lucky that she had just taken maternity leave just before all this crazyness got bad ...

If your barber or beauty salon offers gift certificates, purchase them now (if possible) as that's a means of providing that cash through the down time. My wife did that with salon she goes to. It may not be much but it's something.

I've been watching the CBC Manitoba news casts and nothing has been reported about anyone having problems getting estential treatment or medications. If the story was true one call would have that situation rectified.
