It’s called a “Sports Mask”. Has charcoal filters and exhalation valves...

Picked my two up at a local locksmith shop but they are available online....

Protects against viral influenza, PM2.5, Dust allergies and a few other things....

A tad pricy at $20 each but well worth it I think...

No doubt about it, folks have become quite creative with masks. In the past few days I have seen everything from surgical and N95 masks to modified ski masks in all colors imaginable. Some have added their favorite logos. Deserving of honorable mention are the factions sporting the old west type paisley neckerchiefs who look like they're on their way to rob a stage coach!

A little problem with those exhalation valves ... The reason for the mask is to prevent YOU from spreading virus. If the exhalation valves are unfiltered, they defeat the whole purpose...

Dave

But it sure LOOKS good!

Something like that happened to me today. Had to take my cat to the vet. The assistant came in first to check vitals, and told me that she liked my face mask. her's was a cat theme mask. And I like it also. We had a whole discussion on masks. Then I said, that I didn't want to pay $10 for one like her's. She said a client made hers as a gift. I told her I made mine after seeing a YouTube ,myself. It took me a while to get it just right, but since I have a bunch of fabric since I use to make a lot of my whole cloths, it was great.

Most of the mask I see do little or nothing to protect people but if it makes people FEEL safe no harm.

We use the one the Surgeon General showed in a video. Made from a simple cloth table napkin folded over three times and attached to your ears via rubber bands. This works great, and the best thing is you can toss them in the washing machine and re-use them.

Several years ago, we had need to remodel a home with mold. Mold can cause serious respiratory problems and death like this virus. To remediate the mold, we bought two 3-M full face masks and disposable coveralls. The unused coveralls and face masks have been stored. The masks are great for spraying, dust conditions, mold and now medical. We have fished them out for another task. The masks are near impossible to find now and those that are available will cost an extremity. EBay has had a few up for auction. Even a used one is at a premium.

We have tried the half masks prior to the full face mask and there is a world of difference. There was air leakage with the half mask even when fitted to the face. It was pretty obvious when working with chemical odors. With the full-face mask, there is no exterior odor penetration and no fogging. Filter canisters are replaceable. We bought a medium and a large. They fit the face well, have an exhaust valve and breathing is not labored in or out. The only disadvantage to wearing them is the perception we are preventing health care workers from having them (they look new).

As for your robbery comment, we wear protective gear. We have told told the clerks that in better times, this might look like a robbery. It does bring the reality to the situation.

I cut off the sleeve of a t-shirt and use that where required.

So what do you think happens with the surgical masks CDC is advising people to wear?

Not much. I'm still looking for something other than the one time use n95 that someone gave me. Can't breathe in those things. I have no idea how doctors and nurses do it.
