OLYMPIA – Gov. Jay Inslee Thursday (4/2) announced an extension of his emergency stay-home order through May 4 to halt the spread of the new coronavirus.

Not to sure about federal law. In Washington state you petition the state to get your business onto the essential business list. You make justification and the government determines if you are worthy. Feds not involved.

Here in Alaska we sit idly by waiting for another "edict" from our Governor in Juneau. We already have a intrastate travel ban. Yesterday, one our major airline carriers that service our outlying communities with grocery and mail service announced that they are parking their entire fleet. Our Governor now has a mess on his hands with no path forward. We're all waiting for his next decree to see who loses next.

Alaska has only 171 cases and 5 reported deaths as of today. I think your Governor is trying to keep those numbers where they are.

Other states that resisted stay at home/travel restrictions/facility shut downs, haven't been so lucky.

Remember, this all started when the first patient died back at the end of January. Here we are 2-1/2 months later with over 9,000 deaths and 720 more added so far today. The reporting period for today still has 7 hours to go. Yesterday's toll was 1,331 new deaths.

As I said, your Governor is trying to keep Alaska down at those low numbers, especially considering how difficult it is to provide medical services to all the remote villages.

Unfortunately, few outside of Alaska understand what it means to have airlines shut down service to towns outside of the greater Anchorage area. It means NO fresh food of any kind, NO milk or dairy products, and just as important, NO transport of fresh fish to market. If the airlines are shut down, the ONLY way the outlying towns get serviced is through barge service - mostly from Seattle - several days or weeks depending on location.

X2. Today, our major intra-Alaska carrier, RAV'N AIR has shuttered and filed for bankruptcy. This is not good news. It certainly looks like Alaska will go back to the days of the independent "bush pilots" to haul mail and goods to the outlying villages. Our annual commercial salmon fishing season is in jeopardy. With current travel restrictions in place the commercial vessels may be forced to miss the salmon run. There is no amount of Federal money that can make the salmon run again this year. There are roughly 5,000 personnel poised to travel to Bristol Bay to support commercial fishing, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen given the current circumstances. Currently, anyone coming into Alaska must quarantine for 14 days immediately.
