Leaking fresh water tank

I have a pinhole in my fresh water tank, what could I use to repair the leak?

A pin? Sorry, couldn't resist. JB Weld should work. Maybe melt it closed with a heat gun.

If the tank is polyethylene, then JB weld wont bind to it. I’ve used marine grade silicone as it’s more firm and has better adhesion compared to standard silicone.

Be sure to lightly scuff the area with sandpaper or a stainless steel brush.

Thanks for the suggestions, and Yes it is a pinhole, I removed the foam around the drain valve and there it was, I’m still trying to figure out how you get a pinhole there.
Again thanks for the suggestions.

When you say the ‘the pinhole is around the valve’, is it coming from the joint/weld area? If so, then any adhesive added will only be a quick fix and will most likely render any permanent repairs impossible.

If this is truly the case I retract what I suggested in my previous post. When I read your description of the problem it sounded like the pinhole was by itself and an isolated issue.

It is by itself, about 2 inches away from the drain, I was surprised that the tank was not made of a more ridged material. Another pound or two should not have made A significant difference in weight to the TT.

OK, since it's truly a pinhole I've used this product with great success on polyethylene water tanks. Scuff the area, clean with acetone and apply a quarter size amount about an 1/8" thick.

Nothing "bonds" to polyethylene, however I have a couple of portable water tanks that are going on 4 years of successful repair and they get banged around more than any RV tank would.

If I recall correctly Polyethylene "sticks" are available for good old fashioned Glue Guns.

Perhaps heating up a glue gun so the nozzle can be placed on the "pinhole", melting some of the tank material, then squeezing hot glue into the melted tank material, would make for a really nice weld.

Kind of like repairing a similar hole in a steel tank with a mig welder.

If trying the above I'd make sure the tank was empty and I'd dry the "hole" as much as possible with both compressed air and a heat gun/hair dryer before attempting the repair. Water tends to resist any attempt to either "weld" or "Glue".

I’m guessing normal fresh water tanks are rigid enough 97+/-% of the time. Mine squeezed down between its support braces several inches but didn’t get a leak.Click image for larger version

I am not trying to turn this "pinhole in my fresh water tank" thread into a fix your "sagging fresh water tank" thread however, for those with curious minds, the following is a link to a recent discussion regarding sagging fresh water tank modifications...

Hope this helps,

Maybe get a small stainless screw and put 5200 marine sealant on it and screw it into the hole.
