Newbie question - Getting hot water while using only water in fresh water tank

Please don't roast me this question but how can you get hot water while only using fresh water tank water? How will the WH fill up? I am confused how this works so if someone didn't mind explaining this to me, I would greatly appreciate your help. 2016 Salem Hemisphere 356 QBS. I have spent a day searching for this answer with no luck.

First, before you turn on the WH, you make sure there's water in the WH, by running the pump and opening the hot side of a faucet.
After that, it's no different than the process when on city water, other than you leaving the pump on when needing water.

Had the issue last summer in Houston.

Did the chicken without a head act for a day.

Duh! Water in Houston from the taps can reach 90 degrees! Gag. In Ohio we bury water lines deep. There they don’t.

Another time, the outside shower was turned off by the spray nozzle. If the valves/faucet are not off it bypasses to the cold water.

Same is true of the shower if you can turn the flow of water off with the shower hose!

There, two good ones.

And in the hot water heater if the bypass valve between the two lines is cracked or broken. Or not closed.

So simply running the pump and opening a hot water faucet, this will fill the WH with water then I can turn it on? How do you know the tank is full, by water coming out the faucet?

If it comes out the hot water faucet the tank is full.
Same applies when hooked up to city water.

UNLESS the WH is in bypass mode. But if the OP's hot water was working on city water, it shouldn't be in bypass.

Be sure to go to the outside and open the WH cover. Pull the pressure relief valve lever to see if water comes out.
If your bypass valves are still in the bypass setting your water will go right past the WH and come out the hot side of the faucet even thought no water is actually in WH.

Thanks for the plumbing schematic! Does anyone know if the FR Flagstaff ePro 14fk has the connection to automatically fill the onboard freshwater tank from the city/shore water connection? Since I've not actually ever seen a schematic for our TT, I really don't know and we've never really taken it on the road since we bought it last Fall. I could experiment, but the TT is in a storage lot and I thought I would be lazy and ask here.

Seriously doubt it.
I've personally never seen such an automatic setup. Maybe a valve lever to flip, which I've seen on higher end 5th wheels or Motorhomes. But not on small TTs.
Your E Pro most certainly has a FW tank fill port and a separate city water hookup. In fact, if your FW tank fills up when on city water, you have a check valve problem.

Next time you're out at your TT, take a picture of the water hook up arrangement and post it. My Leprechaun motor home has a single water connection. It fills the FW tank or provides city water depending on what position the valve is in. Just select which one you want, preferably before you stand around for a half hour bemoaning how low the pressure in campground water system must be because your FW tank hasn't filled yet only to discover that the lever is in the city water position.

The pump won’t stop running if a hot side faucet is open as suggested.

Do you have the valve open to the tank.

My original questions have been answered. I was not aware that the pump would fill the HW tank. All trips we took so far were hooked up to water. Thank you all for the help and advice, much appreciated.
