fifth wheel question

love my 2020 sandpiper 39bark fifth wheel, the only issue I have is hooking up and unhooking I have to use he two step method, back up till the pin box is in back of truck, close tailgate the finish hooking up, otherwise the tailgate will hit the trailer, I did not have this issue with my Jayco fifth wheel, I tow with 2021 ford f-350 crew cab 4x4 long bed. Seem like the pin box is too short or set too far back on the trailer, I have looked into getting a longer pin box but there are not any that will fit the rhino box. I sent an email to Forest River customer service but have not had any response. Has anybody else run into this issue?

Any time your hooking up to a 5er you have to drop the tail gate unless you installed a 5th wheel tail gate which you did not mention. Later RJD

Does this truck have the new puck hitch type hook up? Can you slide the hitch back?

What forward/rearward position are the arms for the hitch head mounted in? There's about +-2" of room there to adjust.

With my B&W sitting in my factory Ford pucks, I have the arms mounted all the way rearward and can hitch solid without having to raise my tailgate.

I do not have to raise tailgate to hitch. I have 3500 chevorlet which shouldnít make a difference. After I hook up I shut tailgate. Has got to be an adjustment I would think, if I had to hook up like that I would have already hit front of rv! Lol

OP means that the tailgate is down as they start backing up.

After the kingpin clears the tailgate, they have to go put the tailgate up because if they don't, the tailgate will hit the trailer.

Do a search for Rhino pin box in this forum or others. Several reports of others having your tailgate clearance problem with the Rhino.

Post a picture of your king pin/hitch box. I have a different RV but similar truck...my tailgate is close but doesn't hit if im backing straight. The corner will if I am at a decent angle to the RV.

Thank you, I did find where other people have had the same concern and looks like sandpiper stepped up. Sent an email to sandpiper. We will see what happens.

Gbw you have the new rhino box king pin. I have it on my sierra, it's the same camper as the sandpipers. Call Forrest River, I spoke with them. They are recalling alot of their early built units because their king pins were too short on their new rhino boxes. They now make a longer rhino box which they will give you for free, u might have to go through your dealership service center. But FR is awauof the issue and replacing those shorter rhino boxes.

That's a crazy error. How long have they been in this business?
