trailer mishap

Up until today I was a proud owner of a new 376bhok. I went out to the storage lot to load some things in it. I had to hitch it up and pull it out to open the slides. I guess the hitch didn't latch all the way and the trailer dropped in the my bed rails. I'm new to 5th wheels and I must not have checked everything like I should have. Anyway my bed rails are dented pretty bad. Looks like there might be a small crack in the bottom of the front cap. I kkow I'll have to claim the truck on my insurance but I'm more worried about the trailer. I can get fiberglass fixed but do you think there would be any other structural damage? I'd hate to have to file 2 claims if I can help it.

It's hard to say I dropped a jayco in my bed bent the tail gate and put a dent in my truck, I did not have any damage to the trailer at all. My Husky hitch showed locked and the handle went down just like the book say's. Found out that I high hitched and was never below the bar that locks the pin. Learned now to ride up on the plate when I hitch up. Sorry about your damage, but you will not be the first or the last. Last week there was a thread that someone else did the same thing. He also had a Husky 16k, what do you have?

It happens and then you go to the body shop and get it fixed.

Sorry to hear that. It's a good lesson for all of us that pull 5er's to remember that after we hook up and BEFORE we raise the front stabelizer jacks to perform a safety pull by manually locking the trailer brake and try and pull the truck forward. If the hitch has not latched properly, the trailer will not fall on the bed rails and simply rest on the jacks. We all learn from our mistakes and unfortunately from others. Hope you get everything fixed soon and be back out camping!

x2 on the G.O.A.L. Do that and apply the trailer brake and give her a tug.

tone100; Regarding your insurance. Is your trailer insurance and truck insured with the same company? Good Sam will cover both under the same claim if you are. Maybe other companies are the same.

Now I have painted the bar yellow so I can see that it is closed and the pin is behind it and also the above mention tug test. Strange that all 3 have been the Husky 16k. Makes me wounder now.

Get Out And Look . We put stickers on companies pickup windows. We had a couple guys drop goosenecks, luckily on the yard. It's also popular with truck drivers.

I googled G.O.A.L and see it means "Get Out And Look". That's good to remember but still need to do that tug test!!

Since the truck was moving, your truck's collision should cover both.

As to prevention, check this out:

I think 2"-3" is a little high. I just raise mine enough to just barely clear the ground as if it isn't latched, it won't have far to fall and possibly damage the landing jacks.

Butch's Service's

Butch has a nice 46$ king pin lock pin that could have saved your bed, not ever owning a 5th wheel camper before, this is the first mod. that we did, have pulled like ten times already and yes it has saved my tale once already, not a bad investment for $46.00 bucks"

Thanks for the advice, OC. I've wondered about that and now I know. That's what I love about this forum. There's always something new to learn.
