42'10" a problem at campsites?

We are lookinh at the Sierra 370rdok, and have noticed that MANY state parks have a 40' max length. Anyone having issues with that or are the state parks allowing you in anyways?

We have been to (Lots) of C/G. Some sites you will be able,some sites you wont. Trees,posts,water hydrants,small radius cul de sacs,and other campers parking where they should NOT,otherwise you should be Good to Go! Place the unit then park the T/V in guest parking. Youroo!!

I can only speak from limited state park experience (Wisconsin and a few other states), but there are plenty of 40+ foot sites. However, that's not to say that getting around in a state park is easy in a large rig.

From my experience, they are out there, just fewer of them. This could be an issue if you are trying to get into a popular cg at a particular time.

In our case going from a 25ft TT to a 35ft FW, definitely limits us at many MI state parks. Not impossible, but tougher.

I think many state parks in the Eastern US have longer campsites than many in the West. (From observing forum responses on different sites.)

We have been in many state parks in VA, MD, TN, SC, AL and NC and have found many sites that will fit our 35' 5'er, plus park the truck in front of it. (We are 58' long.)

Most of the larger sites in parks are newer or have been refurbed.

In Virginia you should be good at most state parks. James river, Douthat, Smith mountain lake. These are a few that I have been to that I know you would be ok at

First off, welcome to the Forest River Forum.

Whether or not your rig can be accommodated by state parks will vary from state to state and park to park. I would suggest you drive to the nearest state park and take a look at the campsites. If the sites will fit your trailer but not the truck is there a place to park the truck nearby? Are the roads wide enough so that you can back that monster of a rig into those sites? Is the campsite driveway angled to the road or perpendicular? BTW, many sites that have perpendicular driveways can be a bear to back into. If I had a rig that was 43 feet long I wouldn’t want to reserve a site that had a maximum of 40 feet. You might find yourself not camping that weekend.

I have found here in Washington that when they measure the length of the site it is from the edge of the road to the tire stop, a lot of trailers have 5 or more feet beyond the back wheel. But like everything, sites vary and we look for additional sites in the camp ground we are staying and mark them on the map for future use. Good luck!

I would definitely call ahead and ask. We went to a state park in West Virginia a few years ago and a 30 foot trailer was max luckily at the time we had a 24 foot trailer and I was glad it wasn't any longer. In Michigan we have been to 2 state parks and been able to put our 5w in without to much trouble. (just my backing abilities..lol)

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a 42' 5er and you have to do your homework before going some places. Not only the CG sites, the roads you travel as well. I look for "big rig" friendly places, but even some of those are tight to maneuver and get around. Some places the site will be barely longer than the 5er. Just have to talk to the CGs and make sure they have sites that will accommodate. Enjoy the 5er!

Edit- we don't go many state parks, mostly private owned campgrounds.

I can't take my camper to the campground that I love more than any other- it holds all of my childhood dreams and memories. I can fit some sites (though, parking would/could be challenging); it's getting around the campground roads that would be nerve wracking.

I can tell you that State Parks in California don't have very many sites to handle a 40 foot trailer.
so I don't know what state parks you're talking about.

We live in VA but are planning on becoming full timers in May. The unit is the Sierra 370rdok. We are planning on travelint from VA to Washington and down the west coast.

Oregon state parks have lots of campsites that will accommodate yours.
but not in California state parks. the few that are big enough, are usually already booked 6 months before.

Rickb, most cg's in MD SP's are not large rig friendly. 32' used to be the max. There also aren't that many cg's in MD period. We have a 365 and at 42' there are a lot of places we don't go. Many east coast cg's are older and not designed for our rig. We call ahead when traveling and we keep the guide book in the cab for reference. When we have gone out west we found less of an issue with our size. Our IPad has also proven priceless on occasions as well. Being our size it's a challenge but a game stopper.

don’t y’all just love the 370RDOK? i absolutely love mine. have y’all changed anything up on yalls? have you added. security system with cameras? i’m going to install mine today and run then to the entertainment center outside and in to the living room entertainment center.
