Basement Doors

What do y'all use to hold your basement doors open when loading and unloading? It drives me nuts there's not a catch or something on to prevent it from slamming around in the wind.

I was thinking of a spring catch like on boat hatches.

Those suggestions are great but because the door opens beyond the front of the unit they're more challenging to install and use. I used these below and simply used 3m tape instead of screws, they seem to work well and hold the door open nicely

The magnet looks interesting. How has it held up so far? I hate those plastic flip ups.

Our Crusader has a flip up door on curb side that has magnets on door and also on the side of the unit - very handy and only one hand needed to push up or to close - the driver side has struts on that door - also handy

The magnetic catches are very strong and sturdy. They are zinc so strong and weather resistant. one or no hand operation as they latch automatically.

The catches also alleviate having to remove the rubber/plastic trim at the bottom of the awning support strut as it gets in the way on the passenger side when awning is retraced. Magnetic holder can be placed so that door catches and stays open without this getting in the way.

Hi BigTJohn,

Hydraulic lifts may not be a great solution here, the doors open left to right, not up and down so there is no weight or gravity to overcome the strength of the lift, I fear they might open the hatch too quickly or powerfully. Just my $.02

I love my basement slam closed bus style doors. Mabey you can retrofit to these, they open to the front

Installed 2 gas struts on each door. They hold the doors open just fine.

That's works fine on a door that picks up, but the OP says his opens sideways like a house door is what I read, strut couldn't work. Nice picture through...

Works on doors that swing to the side also. Does on my entrance door anyway.

You're correct. Sideways vs up and down. I know ones going to get crunched if I don't do something soon.

Yea it will open and close but he wanted to hold it open. I guess it could work who knows, I'm sure he will figure it out... I thought you installed a regular door closer not a strut on your door? The strut on the door was factory, I merely moved the anchor points 2-1/4" closer to the hinge to make it work.

The struts don't know whether they are horizontal or vertical, they hold the door open just fine. Either one or 2 struts will hold a side opening door open just like they do a door that opens up. Geeeeze!

Bungee cord seems to work or me. Got plenty laying around and don't cost much.
