Furnace runs once, then won't restart

Our furnace runs once, then won't automatically restart after the temp drops below the set point. I have to turn the unit off at the thermostat, then turn it back on to get it to run. The A/C works fine. Any ideas?

My first guess would be the thermostat.

If you have a stock mechanical t-stat, do yourself a favor and get a digital Honeywell from Walmart. Install is easy and it works much better than OEM one.

If new digital thermostat doesn't fix it, check the control board on the heater. Clean out any debris, check connections, and cleaning contacts on the control board.

The t-stat is the original digital hockey puck Dometic that came with our 2016 Wildcat 323RBX.

We had an older Jayco that acted the same. Run once and wouldn't relight until the power was cycled to the furnace. Had to replace the control board. Bought a Dinosaur board and never had another issue.

Same Furnace Problem

I've had my Coachman Freelander for 3 years. First two years the Furnace did same thing. Also there were times that it wouldn't start at all. Multiple trips to CW and each time they returned it but did not fix it. Finally one of the techs worked with Dometic and got new board. Since replacement Furnace works well. Same sad story for the hot water heater. Dometic products are very poor and cause much grief in RV community.

Two major trips this year have gone well. No problems. Knock on wood!

I've had my furnace "repaired" and/or "thoroughly checked out" 3 times now, not including the pre-possession "complete check of all systems, plumbing, mechanical and electrical" by the dealer. Still doesn't work. I could by a house for what I paid for this FW and have fewer problems than what I've had with this FRW.

Swapped out the thermostat yesterday. Still acts stupid. Has to be the control board. Dealership calling me on Monday to discuss. Got down to 42 here last night, so the space heaters were working overtime.

Dealer is paying or I won't be buying my RiverStone from them. [emoji16]

My Roo 19 had the cheap Suburban analog T-stat. Same issue as you: furnace would start once, then never again unless I turned it off and back on at the T-stat. Replaced it with a Honeywell digital and never had another problem.

Dealer gave me a thermostat to try. Same Dometic model as the original. I questioned why they thought this was a good idea, but they assured me it was a good one. Now it's back in their court. Once it's working, I will say goodbye to the crappy Dometic and get a real one. [emoji48]

After all the attempts they finally took my advice and replaced the control board. Guess what? It works like a charm now. Sheesh.

Glad to hear that it is fixed. Thank you for letting us know what the fix was.

I had the same deal going on an Atwood furnasty in my old Jayco. CW said it was a board and sail switch. They took their own sweet time getting it not fixed. After six weeks in May, I went into it myself. After I bought the board and verified the sail switch was ok , replaced it and it still didn't work,( to say it is a PIA is a gross understatement).

I replaced the igniter. That stupid thing sends a flame presence signal back through the same wire to the board and has to have a good ground path to the chassis mount. IMHO I believe the integrity of that ground path on the igniter mount must play a significant role to the flame presence feature that may have less importance where the high voltage spark ignition is concerned and can jump it.

You can find manuals(.pdf) for these Atwoods and Suburban units online. Look at the troubleshooting and circuit diagrams( ignitor) you will see one wire going to igniter and a ground symbol. It gets some degree of corrosion from the heat path. My suggestion would be demount it ,wire brush the ground path and reinstall.

I had similar issues this year with the Suburban WH this year where it made a helluva bang lighting up on propane. Common consensus said "debris in the burner tube" and I couldn't see any evidence of it. I cleaned, re-grounded and checked the set on the igniter and problem solved. Just my 2 cents FWIW
