swaying fifth wheel

I was driving on the highway and the wind wasn't very noticeable but was passing a FR Flagstaff at 75 mph, he was prob going 65. He was swaying quite a bit and was surprised. He had a ford 250. the trailer looked like a

Curiosity hit me as I get a little sway with some wind and I always felt it was the position of the tires on my model trailer being a little more in the middle rather than toward the back.
I personally tow triple with it, I have a boat on the back and it doesnt add or take away from my little bit of sway.

was just wondering as I saw this guy struggling it appears.

My older 5th wheel I used to have would pull triples through heavy wind and going 80 and never skipped a beat.

What is the 3rd unit you are pulling behind the boat? 80 MPH is a "Little Fast" pulling 3 things behind your truck! Youroo!!

youroo, in most places "triple tow" really only means 2 trailers.. that's what I assume he means.

As for the sway, was his flagstaff a TT? 5th wheels inherently don't sway much because of the design (pivot at the axle) His sway could be any variety of reasons, improper hitch setup, improper loading of weight, tires, TV issues.

Think he's refering to Truck, Trailer, Boat as the 3. I see what you're getting at. That would be towing "Doubles."

Unless ALL the tires on ALL the trailers you are towing are rated for more than 65 mph I wouldn't exceed that speed let alone 80!

But, I agree......the other guy need to check his setup.

Correct.

I doubt it was sway, more likely just bad driving. It is very hard to get a 5th wheel to sway due to the pivot point. You can make it look like it is swaying by moving the wheel back and forth, but it would take a very tail heavy trailer to cause it to sway any. When I was bringing my 43' long empty 3660 home, 25 MPH gusts were hitting it, and the entire rig moved as one, and the trailer was very light on the pin, only a little over 15%. I felt them, but it was no different than the 18's I drove for several years. eh a little push.

Hmm I find this funny. The only truck I ever had to have towed was a Chevy, and it was towed by a Ford. I had to have it towed because the brainiacs at GM used bi-metal lifts for the spare tires that corrode making getting the spare tire off impossible. Towed for a flat. SMDH.

Why would you tow with a flat tire? I had a truck that the spare lift rusted into a useless piece of junk. I got out a chisel and a BFH and cut the cable to get the spare out. Who says that carrying extra tools is not a good idea?

Well, it was cold, it was wet, my two young kids, my wife and my mother were all with, my father in law came out to help and neither of us could get it loose. The tire would drop about an inch. It was late on a Sunday, no tire shops were open, so had no choice but to have it towed, besides, what good is having towing on your insurance if you don't use it?

If you want, go look up 2003 GM spare tire carrier issues for the pickup and see what it's like trying to release the spare. When I finally got it home I was able to take the rear bumper off to get a long pry bar in there and beat the snot out of the latch until it finally released. Taking the bumper off was the only way to reach it. I have had a lot of trucks over the past 40 years, and that was the only one I had to have towed. For a flat. SMH.

Between that and the rotting brake lines I was completely done with anything GM.

Didn't have to have my old 1991 towed but, I knew the spare was stuck under there as I was always able to check the air pressure without taking it down. Only thought of putting a new on on for dry rot & age reasons but couldn't get it down. So, I let it go & hoped I never needed to change a tire. 13 years later, DS had a slight accident with a tree in the snow and the spare fell off!

ummm, they are thats why I was going the speed I wanted to tow. I been towing this way for a long time with many trucks and different brand RV's and never had a problem. I try to buy the best tires I can find. They are rated for 87, i think they are N rated

Like I said it was a little windy not horrible but he was swaying quite a bit, he wasnt driving crazy he was old. Just making a point on axle positions and all. Maybe he was overloaded in the rear of the Rv? Maybe that model of RV isnt great I dont know just struck me as odd as I was behind him some.

if the OP was towing Doubles at 80 MPH he is the Crazy one IMHO.. also fifth wheels don't sway. if he had sway it was his TV tires moving as in a SRW instead of a DRW
