Adding 12v switch

Ok so my bathroom fan only works when lights are on so i ordered a new daul switch so i could turn on with out the lights on should be simple install so im missing something when i wired the new switch in.
I ran a new power wire from new switch to fan. on the orginal switch in wall one wire was white with red stripe (power) i ran jumper from that wire to new switch for power.on second terminal was white wire with orange stripe that ran to the lights in bathroom and bedroom and then there was 3 solid white wires all wire nut together.
My question is why do i still need turn on the light in order to run the fan? i was trying to use ground wire already there and also left the switch at fan hooked up.

sounds to me like all you wired a second switch into the same power loop. You need to pull the fan cover and find the incoming power (not at the switch) and break the connection there running a new wire to the second switch and back to the fan.

Did you test the voltage with the light off to see if the White/Red wire was hot with it off?

Sounds like the White/Orange wire may have been the hot.

Can you post a picture of the wiring on the back of the switch?

Yes white/red is 12v supply
White/Orange is feed line it runs to every light and cut in half and light wired in just a daisy chain.thats why i ran power wire.it works fine the way it is i dont half reach up turn fan on or off that was the main fix.

You said "I ran a new power wire from new switch to fan." How did you terminate this wire at fan?
