Anyone using a Tacoma Tow Vehicle

We have a Micro Lite Travel 21FBS and was wondering if any of you are pulling this or something real close to it with a Toyota Tacoma V6 with towing package. Thanks

I pull a Rockwood 2304ks (same as Flagstaff 23fbks) with a 2009 V6 Tacoma. Our trailer is about the same weight as the 21FBS. Just got back from our maiden voyage with the trailer and towed great. I have pulled our 23 foot boat with the truck for years.

I had a Tacoma 2016 V6 4x4 and towed a pacific coachworks Tango 18RBS, 5000 pounds at 500 tongue weight. Other than crappy gas mileage, it worked fine. Traded in for a real truck (j/k) and traded the Tango for a 31 foot toy hauler. If your Tacoma is a 2016 or 2017, there's a recall out.

I tow a 21DK (4000 lbs plus) -4th gear on hilly terrain 9 mpg, and 12 to 13 mpg on the flats.

I have 2015 Tacoma, V6, Towing Package.
Just bought and towed a MicroLite 23' with no problems. Of course, there aren't many hills in Florida. Heading north later this year and will test it our.

BTW: Stay under 58 mph and your gas mileage will improve nicely.

I have a 2015 Tacoma PreRunner with towing pkg and pull a 23 ft Flagstaff up and down some pretty serious inclines in East Tennessee. Very pleased with the combo.

We have a Rockwood Mini Lite 2104S - 21'7" long including the tongue, dry weight of 4304 lbs. and tongue weight around 400 lbs. We are towing with a 2007 Toyota Tacoma V6 4x4 with factory installed towing package. Going up inclines on the road and hills slows us down but we just put it in 4th gear and keep moving. Gas mileage is not good. We currently get around 7 mpg. Hoping that will improve as we get more familiar with pulling a camper.

My husband was concerned about the effect on the transmission from pulling the camper. I researched lots of information on Toyota's Tacoma V6 /pulling capacity and most people say the camper pulling will not hurt the transmission, you just can't run with the big dogs going up a hill. One guy on the Toyota forum said he had been pulling for more than 50 years and had been using a Toyota Tacoma the past few years. He said just get in the right hand lane and let the others pass you. The one thing we have noticed in wind of 15-17mph the truck physically moves on the road because it is a lighter weight truck.

We looked at purchasing a new Toyota Tundra and other brands of trucks as well that have a V8 engine. None will fit in the garage as they are all 229 or 230 inches long. So for now we will be using our Toyota Tacoma which does a fine job.

I towed our former Roo 23SS (5200# fully loaded) with a '09 Tacoma TRD 4 dr 4x4. The towing experience was like others said - it's no rocket but it worked. Fuel mileage from that 4.0L sucked even without pulling a trailer but otherwise I loved that truck. The problem was payload capacity. With just 2 of us in the truck we were right at the GVWR. With our family of 5, I had to upgrade to a 1/2 ton.

If your Micro Lite is much lighter and you only have 2 people in it, you should be fine but you'll notice the fuel mileage will be a lot worse.

Okay, thank you all for the replies, I have a 2013 F-150 Ecoboost, I was just thinking of getting a new truck. I got the new truck fever but was able to shake the fever this morning, Ive decided to keep what I have until the Tundra comes out with a better gas saving engine/truck. Maybe in 2018 I don't know

Just wanted to say thank you to all who responded. I'm towing a micro lite 21fbrs with a Nissan Frontier which has basically the same ratings as the Tacoma. I thank you cause this post was equally informative for me. I too wondered about transmission problems and poor gas mileage and the hills and stuff. Looks like we are all in the same boat on this one. Ain't going to be setting any speed records but it does the job. Eased my mind..

I have a 2013 Toyota Tacoma, 4 x 4 crew cab. I am currently towing a Rockwood 2304Ks that weighs 4400 lbs dry. I also have a rack on the truck and carry 2 kayaks. This weekend I towed the trailer fully loaded including food and a full fresh water tank. Since I weighed most of what was placed in the camper and adding in the weight of the water I was in the ballpark of 5200-5400 pounds. The truck does fine. Yes, I do feel it when climbing hills, but the truck handles it very well. A bigger truck would do better but I would rather have lousy gas mileage when towing and not everyday driving. As others have noted, the biggest problem is the payload. With the DW and I, the kayaks and other misc. hardware, and a 580 lb. tongue weight, we have reached the 1050 lb. payload capacity.

fyi, my mpg only dropped by 1 mpg when I went from the 4.0L Tacoma to the 5.4L F-150 it but towed much better. That's why I said the Tacoma's fuel economy sucked.

For what its worth, I tow with a BMW X5M a Microlite 21DS which weighs about the same. I average about 8-9mpg @ 70mph, its the bad aerodynamics of the trailer and speed you drive. I see the same on most vehicles with this trailer. It takes a lot of fuel to drag a barn door through the air. My older X5 4.8i got as low as 7.3mpg and as high as 8.3mpg @ 70mph. Frankly I wouldn't want to tow a 4300 lbs trailer with less than about 350hp in order to stay at traffic speeds.

The wind moving the truck maybe sway and an anti-sway hitch may solve your problem. A bigger truck can help, but it won't stop sway.

Tacoma

Towing a 21DS with a 2016 Tacoma with tow package. Low end torque a little disappointing as are the small rear view mirrors but overall am satisfied. Purchased an observation camera which helps a lot.

Takoma 6cyl crew cab

I am currently towing a Rockwood 2304KS with a 2013 Toyota Takoma 6 cyl. Crew cab. The trailer weighs 4400 pounds dry and 5200 pounds loaded to go. I have also added timbrens to help stiffen the ride a little but did that at a later date. The Takoma did just fine before I added the timbrens. I have not traveled out West yet, but have done a significant portion of the East Coast mountains and I think the Takoma does just fine. I use a dual cam weight distribution and sway control hitch and have not encountered any sway problems at all. I also have extension mirrors that help with the rear view mirrors and hope to add the observation camera at some point. My only complaint with the Takoma is with it payload capacity. Since the hitch weight of the 2304KS is almost 600 pounds and the wife and I account for another 350 pounds we are very limited with what else can be put in the truck since the payload capacity is only 1040 pounds. I have added 2 kayaks and a Yamaha 2000si and it feels fine but that is pushing it. I average between 12-14 mpg. but seldom travel more than 65 mph. It is at the faster speeds that you will watch your fuel economy suffer due to wind resistance.
