this question comes up from time to time. i agree you should take the filter cartridge out and store it before winterizing. ditto for the one in the refrigerator if you have one there also. you can buy that winterizing plate for what $10? now what is the capacity of the filter housing? let's say 1/2 gallon. and what does antifreeze cost? lets say $3.00/gal. so the cartridge hold about $1.50 of antifreeze. so the $10 plate will pay for itself in just over 6 years (assuming one winterization / year). one post i read said that after they are done winterized they take the cartridge off and pour the antifreeze that is in it down the drains.
