rp53, well that went better than I could have hoped for. Now, I rate my honeydo-handyman skills as average or sub average. This jack knife sofa replacement took about 30 minuets, and all it took was a couple of open end wrenches, or a socket set.
The JK sofa was secured to the platform with 4 bolts. Once I removed those, I unassembled the JK sofa, separating the bottom and back cushions, not required, but made it easier to remove from the camper.
The platform measures 73w 35d. The futon is 71w 34d, and it fit perfectly.
Obviously, we did not install the legs on the futon, we simply placed the futon base on the platform.

I haven’t secured the futon to the platform yet, working on a simple solution for that.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I like the size of the bottom and back cushions. It’s a little stiff out of the box, a little use will help with that. But yes, sits much better than the JK. I’m happy with the upgrade. Bought the futon online at Wayfair. If I had to do it over, I’d shop retail, feel what I’m buying first.

thanks for all your info, agree there is actually a futon store near me think the DW will check them out as it seems that we are not going to be able to find recliners that will work, not in a hurry first trip for us is first week in May.... I hate winter, see your in Fl. guess you don't have to worry about that

You’re welcome. I think the platform height eliminates having recliners. Born and raised in the SE, living in N Florida for last 20 years, I hate cold weather. We’re able to go camping at least a weekend every month.

That looks really nice. As others have observed it has to be better, i.e. more comfortable. We have an extra futon in our basement family room that measures 73” without the arm rests. I’ll do some measuring and see if it will fit. Thanks so much. We’re headed south in a couple weeks.

your right about the platform height and recliners, the only one i've seen that might work is the attached you would have to leave the legs off and it's ugly DW would not have that in her TT

It will be tight and snug, but 73” should fit. My primary concern was finding a futon that would fit in the TT doorway. Most of the futon In mid to low price range would fit, but the futons I liked the most, of course the door width requirements was to much.

Nice. How do you like it? Honestly, anything beats those J/K sofas.

actually it is very comfortable, we kept the jackknife wrapped in plastic stored in the shed so we can keep the futon if we ever sell the TT

tanks so much for the idea

I used an IKEA futon. The tricky part was drilling the holes to match up the hardware. Also I had to get longer hardware. I also am painting the inside to lighten it up.

Replaced the JK sofa...

.. And couldn't be happier. Picked up a 71"futon from Walmart.com and fit like a glove. Best upgrade yet.

Looks good. Did you sit the Futon on top of the platform that covers the slide motor?

Looks great

I assume by your comments that it is more comfortable than the original couch. I think we will be getting one. Thanks

Yep. Just bolted it right on top along the back. Used 4 L brackets along the front as there is a 6 inch overhang. The kickboard space along the front bottom needed to be bigger but as luck would have it, it was exactly 6' x 12" and Home Depot sellers an espresso colored laminate board exactly that size. Fit like a glove.

The futon mod looks really good, I'll definitely have to think about that for the future!
In the meanwhile, the main problem I find with the jackknife sofa comfort wise is just that the bottom cushions are too soft and you kind of bottom out on the carpet base when sitting on it. That makes it uncomfortable after a short while. For now I found a 5 foot long body pillow and put it under the jackknife to add more padding and it helped a lot. The first couple days it kept the seat from completely closing, but only by maybe 2 inches, but the pillow flattened out in a short time so the seat sits all the way down and it still gives more cushion than it had originally. I no longer feel like I'm sitting on the carpeted plywood.

I sat our futon on top of the platform. I had planned to bolt it to the platform, but found it wasn’t necessary. Yes, I agree the futon sits much better than the JK sofa.
