hmj-Dometic RM2554 three way refrigerator.
I have a Dometic RM2554 three way refrigerator. Just finished a 4 week trip using DC mode while towing, AC mode when on shore power, and gas when off grid. No problems including extreme heat in western state. Except, one occasion found the fridge defrosting when on shore power. I went to gas and it worked fine. Another occasion while towing on DC it began to defrost. I went to gas mode and it worked fine. When I later used AC mode and when I later used DC mode the problem would not repeat. Gas mode has never malfunctioned.
A certified tech checked all modes and found nothing amiss. He recommended adding more cooling fans to the exhaust vent.
Has anyone had similar issues and any comments?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum, I see it is your 1st post!
What method was used to monitor the temps to make you believe it was defrosting?

hmj Dometic 3 way
I should clarify that it was the fresh food compartment in which the temp was up. Cooling fins dripping and not cold to touch, mercury thermometer and digital monitor indicated temps approaching 50 degrees.

Please post the year, make of your RV. Or put that information in your profile or signature.
Not many RVs have 3-way fridges, usually only popups and truck campers.

hmj Dometic 3 way
It is a 2016 Microlite 19'. The fridge is an update from the original 2 way which gave a lot of problems.

We use one of these for peace-of-mind. I'm sure you could find a bluetooth capable one if you look.

Boy, that's a lot smaller fridge than the 2-way fridge that came with the trailer.

Three way fridges work better when on propane than AC or DC. You should get a thermometer like the one cboss linked to, but what you noted is in line with how these fridges work. On propane, it was able to maintain temperature but on AC or DC it was losing ground. Exterior and interior fans always help.

Ref
Make sure the door closes properly and the seal around the door is not blocked or damaged. Otherwise, an air leak. Check top, bottom, and both sides.
Yes, I believe propane is more efficient in cooling than AC or DC.

Gotta disagree. Our fridge does really well on AC. We spend 4 months on AC while hosting.

hmj dometic RM2554
Hey Dan,
Just FYI my unit is a direct replacement to the original. The only difference is that it is 3 way not just AC/Gas. Thanks for responding.
