2022 Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S -- heavy hitch weight!
Hi all!
I recently purchased a 2008 Sequoia Limited 4x2 with a max tow capacity of 9500. She's a beast and we love her! She towed our Forest River Rockwood Mini Lite 2306 great, although it was only 3500lbs dry with a 430lb tongue weight. And we did use a weight distributing hitch.
I'm looking at buying a 2022 Forest River Rockwood Mini Lite 2506S that has a dry weight of about 5500lbs, 1400lb cargo capacity, and GVWR of about 6950lbs. But here's the kicker -- they are listing a 814 lb hitch weight for this thing. (Why the heck are these things so heavy on the hitch??)
Are any of you towing anything with that heavy of a hitch?? I hear you are supposed to stay within a 10-15% range for hitch weight, and I CANNOT for the life of me find anything definitive for the Sequoia Limited's max hitch weight. Cars.com states 950lbs with a weight distributing hitch, but I'm not sure how much stock I'd put into cars.com. I did email Toyota for a more definitive answer, but haven't heard back.
I would be using a weight distributing hitch bottom line, but I know with 2 batteries and full LP tanks, I might be pushing it know the Sequoia's payload isn't that great (1370lbs).
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Does the Sequoia have a frame-mounted hitch?
If so, it should have a max capacity marked on it.

The actual hitch weight will exceed what is published. My 2513s is about 150# heavier than published. The 2506s will be even heavier due to the front kitchen and slide. It will likely approach or exceed 1,000#.

welcome to the forum its a great place to get your questions answered. I did a quick search and it looks like the 2008 thru 2010 cab handle 900 to 1K tongue weight. With that said you have to actually match your model code to Toyota's charts in the 2008 to 2009 there is a 1600 lb spread in total trailer weight you can tow only one model showed a weight of 10K. some were under what the new trailer weighs maxed out.

You will be over on both hitch weight and payload w/ actual REAL number. I had the same issue w/ my 2014 Tundra.

My 2021 2506s with two propane tanks full and 2 6v batteries up front weighed in at #892. I usually travel with a bit of fresh water though and the FW tank is all the way in the back, so my traveling TW is about #870. I use a WDH on the Tundra but not on the Discovery, they both do the job nicely with ratings at 9000# and 8900# respectively. Absolutely love the 2506s, it suits us perfectly and I have had 0 issues to date with 28 trips of different lengths and about 5000 miles. A few upgrades: porcelain toilet (more necessity than upgrade ), Bluetooth door lock with keyed alike hatches, teak shower floor (pictures available in the upgrade section here) and a solar on the side panel.
BTW: the Toyotas I’ve towed with have all listed TW’s at 10% of tow rating, with factory packages.
Congrats!

Hitch weight spec are generally without baterries, propane and tanks on the tongue. Some are even without the A/C units on the trailer. My trailer has a tongue weight of 804lbs. With two group 24 batteries and two full propane tanks and also two A/C units, my actual tongue weight is 1160lbs. I had to change the receiver on my truck because it was only rated for 1000lbs. Do not believe any of the brochures. I received my unit several times at the CAT scale to make sure I was getting the correct weight.

Is that for a Rockwood 2506S, which is what the OP is asking about and the thread title also?

I have noticed different hitch weight specs from dealers on the 2022 Rockwood 2506S vs Forest River brochure specs. Dealers show 644lb hitch weight vs 814lb and the 2021 Rockwood 2506 was listed as 644lb… is there an error or did FR actually add 174lb to the hitch weight?

Purchase a sherline tongue weight scale, you'll be glad you did.

I've been considering purchasing one of these, but I wonder how often it would get used after the initial set-up.

I've used mine many times, not just for tongue weight.

I usually will use mine when I've loaded the camper more than normal. Maybe 2-3 times a year. But only because I spent the money, so why not? [emoji6]

I recently bought a WeighSafe adjustable hitch with the scale on the side, very nice to know exactly what the tongue weighs every time.

But a Sherline allows you to use for other trailers or purposes.

And I don't have remove my WDH or involve my truck. Bottom line is that a Sherline scale is more versatile.
