Access to the area under the front of the Murphy Bed?

We recently purchased a 2019.5 Mini Lite 2509S and can't wait to take her out for her maiden voyage. It is sitting in our back yard right now and we have found an issue. My daughter left a slipper on the murphy bed when we folded it up and it is now lost in the area in front of the pass through storage. Does anyone know how to access this area? I did a search of the site but could not come up with anything.

Been there, done that with a cell phone. Sadly, there’s no easy fix. For us it was a matter of getting a yard stick and positioning the bed just right so we could slide the phone to a spot we could reach it. Needless to say, we’re very careful when closing the bed now.

Just take off the mattress and you should be able to reach down and get it.

I tried that. My arm is too big. Mind you I'm not a body builder. We can't see the slipper so we are assuming it is in that area because it was on the bed when I folded it up. I lost my headlamp the same way and had to have my wife reach down the side to get it.

Why isn't your daughter looking for it, she probably has more slender arms? And it's hers. When my daughter was younger she was my "reacher" for things I couldn't access like the headlight bulbs in one of my Japanese cars which has areas only a child can reach.

Small mirror or even your iPhone can often spot things. Don't drop either. Example: I have a remote doorbell in my office I sometimes think isn't working so I set my iPhone to video record, walk downstairs to the other end of the house and push the doorbell. Playing back the video affirms it's working -- delivery guys just ain't pushing it.

She can't reach. She is 5 years old and small for her age to top it off. She can reach only half way down or I would have her do it......

we had a rockwood with murphy bed which we traded after 2 trips with it but I think on mine if anything went past bed frame it went into storage area underneath bed.

It probably depends a little on the unit, but I suspect most are like mine. We lost a puck light in there. Since that was no disaster, it stayed there for a while. But the only way was to remove all the screws in one leaf of the piano hinge. Of course, take the mattress off first.

There is still no access. The mattress platform swings along the curved wall. (At least on mine.)

Go to Harbor Freight and buy a "spring type flexible retriever" with the four hook fingers that extend when you push the button at the other end.

$3-4 is cheap and you will need it again.

My old reliable method for retrieving objects that are hiding in spaces too small for my arm is a good old fashioned wire coat hanger. Unfasten it at the hook end,and straighten. Put back any bends you need to make it a good fishing/sweeping tool. Once you've moved the object to where you can see it, perhaps you can hook it with the coat hangar and lift it out.

If you look in the pass through storage areas you'll notice that the panels separating the area behind the Murphy Bed and storage area are secured by screws through a piece of 3/4"x3/4" wood strip. Remove these screws and you can open a window into the storage area by just moving one end. Shoulsn't need to resort to any sawing.

We call that space the Hole of Doom.

Take 2 yard sticks and fasten them together at a right angle. Slip it down the headboard hole and move it around until the lost item appears. Then reach down and get it or use one of Harbor Freight grabber tools if you arm doesn't reach down there.

We keep that hole plugged with a body pillow when the bed is down - Bed Bath and Beyond ~ $20. It cuts off the cold air from pouring in past the mattress on cold days.

Maybe they've changed recently, but I'm pretty sure the screws on mine are on the "hole of doom" side. You have to get into the hole to unscrew the screws. See the first pic in fella 10's Post #33 of the link below. You can see the screw heads on the inside of the far panel.

I have sent instructions and photos to 43 FROG members for a flip up shelf to fill the void behind the couch and a flip up headboard to fill the gap at the head of the bed. One of the requesters had said that their infant girl had slipped into that void!
I added removable access panels into that front void. But I did that because of another post that warned of the fact that inside that hidden area the the goodpeople of FR only installed screws in every other hole in the main piano hinge. And that, like his unit, the hinge on our unit was pulling away from the knee wall on both ends. I installed through bolts, which pulled the hinge back into position. Then I installed self tapping screws into the empty holes. That, not your daughters slipper, would be the main reason for you to create access holes.

We use three "wedge" pillows to fill the gap at the head of the bed. It does not interfere with folding the bed up.

Our 2016, 2304KS has storage access doors on both sides of the trayler. Panels deny access to the underside of the Murphy bed. Do yourself a BIG favor and cut oopen these panels. You will find that F R only put screws in every other hole of the bed's piano hinge. The hinge WILL pull away from the knee wall/pivot point. Using through bolts, I was able to pull it back into position. Filled the emotyhols with self tapping screws, and added removable panels for cleaning and emergency access.

I've also sent directions to 45 FROG members for a flip up shelf for the gaping, dog swallowing, casm behind the couch and a flip up headboard for the baby swallowing gap at the head. True story, one requester said their infant slipped into that void!
Again, do yourself a favor, repair and re screwthat main hinge, as it WILL eventually pull away!
